Is bad odor from the mouth caused by infection or something else?

Q. I had a root canal about 4 years ago. Starting about 6 months ago I couldn’t eat on that side of my mouth due to pain when biting down. I also have a small knot next to the tooth. In the past two weeks there is a very noxious odor coming from the tooth. Is this caused by an infection or something else? I’m just a little unsure where to go from here.

A. It maybe that the root canal is failing. If that is the case your dentist will need to find the reason and then decide if the problem can be succesfully treated and then the tooth restored. Extraction, retreatment endodontics ( maybe referral to specialist ) replacement of the tooth with a bridge, denture or implant might be options. I have a molar tooth which has been root filled & has had a crown for two years. An infection has developed in the gum root, I have an appointment with the dentist on Monday. In the meantime I was wondering if there is anything I can do to reduce the bad smell and taste?

My tooth broke off last year and the root is left under the gum. It is now starting to ache and the gum is turning black in the space where the tooth was. What will have to be done to get this tooth removed? What will happen if its not removed? How can I get rid of this pain until I can afford treatment? Do u know of dental schools that would be able to help?`

You could try a teaching hospital or see if it could be removed on the NHS
