I’m Experiencing Pain From A Stronger Tooth Whitening Gel Than I’m Used Too, Could It Be Lasting Damage?

Q.
Hello, I whitened my teeth yesterday evening using a 16% gel which I bought from my dentist. I usually use a 10% gel and a different brand and have never had any problems with sensitivity in the past. Following yesterday’s procedure which lasted only 40 minutes, I’m experiencing a great deal of ‘crackling/zinging’ type of pain in my teeth and I’ve been unable to sleep. It’s been just over 24 hours now with not much improvement in the pain and I’m just wondering if I may have caused permanent damage to my teeth? Is there anything I can do to alleviate the symptoms or will they go away on their own? Thanks.

Hi. You might want to use a milder gel, make sure there is no gel on your gums and you may want to even take a paracetamol 45 minutes before treatment. There are also desensitising gels and liquids which can help. I’m sure your dentist will provide you with information if you ask them for some advice. Thank you.
