If My Damaged Tooth Is Crowned, Will It Fracture The Root And What Are My Other Options?

Q.
Hi Dr Hughes. My upper left lateral was crowned to the base of the root after an abscess, which led to subsequent root canal treatment and finally the breaking of the weakened tooth. The post has broken with around a quarter of it still left in the root. Currently it is temporarily re-cemented back in.

Could this be re-crowned or is the removal of the remaining bit of the post likely to fracture the root?

Is is possible to have this re-crowned or is the only option, if I do not want a denture or the risk of damage to the adjoining teeth by a bridge, an implant?

Thank you.

Hi and thank you for asking these very good questions. It may be possible to remove the remaining post and place a new post crown but there is a risk of further damage to the root. Has your dentist suggested a referral to a root canal specialist? Then there is the long term future prognosis of this root to consider and it may be worth having an implant now regardless? If you do not want a denture or bridge then an implant replacement is the only other option we have at our disposable.

Regards, Dr Mark Hughes.
