I want my teeth straightening.

Q.
Dr Hughes

Is it possible to have my teeth straightened through what I think maybe gum disease.
Some have become loose and I had extensive work done when younger to straighten them, but they are out of alignment on the left side and two of my teeth on the bottom have fallen backwards
My gums bleed when brushing and I seem to be producing excessive saliva and it is all very uncomfortable and looks awful
Can you please advise?
I understand there is a procedure where the gums are actually lifted, the gums treated and teeth are put right whilst the gums are lifted – is there such a procedure available?

A.
Hi
You would need to have your gum disease looked after first before even considering any orthodontic movement. Unless it’s under control, any ‘straightening’ treatmetn would exacerbate the problem quite significantly and you could possibly lose some teeth.

My advice would be to see a specialist periodontist (gum specialist) as soon as possible. Your dentist should be able to recommend and refer one to you or I can help if that would be easier.

Please make an appointment to see someone immediately because gum disease is normally progresssive, meaning that if you have lost the attachment of the supporting structures of the teeth it does not come back and ususally gets worse…so time is of the essence!

Kind regards

Mark

Hi Im looking into getting my teeth straighter and whiter as they are crooked, i was given a brace when i was in school, my dentist told me that my bottom jaw hadnt grown forward to line up with top teeth, and the brace wouldtrain my jaw to set in the right place, but it was quite embaressing to wear and could hardly speak with it in so i didnt wear it, and just left my teeth as they were, the dentist said i would have to have my jaw broken andset if i didnt wear it. Im older now and regretting not following my dentists advice, im really concious of the way my teeth are more than my jaw as thats not as noticable and i have coped till now with my teeth not meeting,so im just wanting to make my teeth look more straighter and whiter i feelthat this will really help with my confidence, i just want to see how muchthis will cost and if theres any sort of payment scheme ? if you could getback to me that would be great thankyou for your time

hello i do alot of contact sports which sometimes can take up a few hours during the day. Do you think it possible to wear the aligner while i play sports or should i take it out. I do want to get the most of my brace and wear it as many hours during the day as i can, so if there was some kind of mouth guard device to put over it i would definitely wear it. Have you heard of any such device or would you recommend that i take my brace out? Any help you could give would be brilliant thank you for your time

August 10th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Alonso Says :

Hello there IMO its probably best to take it out Its not inconceivable to get a mouth guard made to fit over the top but it could be quite a mouthful!! However as long as you can manage 16 hours a day it should still be fine

Hello there, I had the thought of having braces going through my mind for over a year now, but i have finally decided that I do want braces becuase i feel very uncomfortable with my smile. But problem is i am 16 already, My birthday is on 19 August and i will then turn 17, is there any chance that I can still get free braces? I live in the UK. The problem with my theeth are that few are overlapping and they are pushed forward quiet a lot. Which is very noticaple. So is there any chance that the NHS can still provide me with braces and how long do you wear them for ? Or does it depend on the teeth ? I would be greafull for an answer. Thank you.

Do call up a few dentist in your area and ask them if NHS braces are available. You will need to wear braces from 4-24 months. Regards

I have been told that i have small roots on 4 of my top molars and having a brace will shorten them further which could result in loosing the teeth. Please can you tell me the chances of this happening? I really want my teeth straightening but not sure if its worth the risk. Also, if i do decide to have braces and worst case i loose a tooth, how much will it cost for a replacement? Your reply would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have really high canines which cause mild pain sometimes and I have some acid erosion on my bottom teeth, which looks like a yellow outline and looks awful to be honest – so I wondered as I’m only 16, will I be able to get veneers free on the NHS to hide the affected teeth and would braces be needed in order to bring down my canine teeth or is there an alternative treatment? If I did need braces, how long would I have to have them for?

August 11th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Markus Says :

Braces are an excellent solution for bringing the high canines down. You may need to waer braces from 6 months to 2 years depending on how much the teeth need to move. You may be able to get the treatment on the NHS so do enquire about this from your local dentists. Regards

One of my Upper Lateral Incisors are wonky an i feel self conscious of this, what would you recommend for this to straighten this tooth? are train track braces the only option, or is there a cheaper option to resolve this problem, i also have a a orange/brown stain on my front tooth and would like to know what possible treatments are available for this issue, i feel unconfident because of these dental problems

August 16th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Conor Says :

A fixed brace is a very good option and the costs will be less than an Invisalign type brace which is removable. You need an assessment with a dentist to figure the cause of the stain. Regards,

August 16th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

You cannot make the teeth longer I’m afraid but it may be possible to get some laser gum recontouring on the ‘square’teeth which will give the appearance of longer teeth. Regards

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. The prices can vary according to the severity of the overcrowding and the type of braces used. Braces vary in cst from £1500 to £10,000. You will need to see an orthodontist for a consultation who can give you a proper treatment plan for your condition

I went to my dentist to request braces since my teet are not aligned. He told me that it is not mandatory to have braces but for cosmetic reason if I want he could fix me braces. But he told me my mouth is small so he will have to remove 4 teet in order to straighten my teet with the braces. I just wanted to know if it is commun to remove 4 teet just like that. I have no problem with my teets, indeed they are very strong and healthy.

Hi I’ve had the IA for 8 weeks. I’m managing on average 16 hours a day. The only noticeable movement was after my first check up (4 weeks) when my teeth were filed. There was some movement in the days after the filing but nothing since. Should I be asking to see my dentist more often than every 4 weeks? At the moment I feel like the IA is only acting as a retainer, and I’m very disappointed with the results so far. Thanks

hello do you think it is possible to have inman aligner treatment at the age of 50? I am in good dental health and have never had a tooth removed. I’ve had a few fillings here and there but i am generally in excellent dental health. My problem is my two front teeth really stick out and protrude, giving me a goofy smile. I do not know why I haven’t had this seen to before, but I finally i have bucked up the courage to have the treatment done. Do you think I will be a suitable candidate? Have you ever successfully treated a patient my age before? thanks

September 6th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

Hello Without seeing you its always difficult to promise Best thing is to go and see a certified inman aligner dentist. Goofy teeth can be treated but it depends on the severity of the case. Age is not an issue Hope this helps

Hi, I had a fixed brace when I was 23 due to an overlap of 10mm since then my teeth have moved back into their original position without the overbite, as in my front 2 teeth are prominent with the others all further behind. Can you advise which would be the best course of action for me. My teeth are in good condition however I would prefer a shorter rather than longer treatment. Thank you for your help.

September 19th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

Dear Enquirer, The length/type of treatment depends on how much teeth movement is required and the type of braces that would best suit your situation. You will need an orthodontist examination to assess you and give you the best treatment options. Regards,

I have a class iii underbite, but its not fully noticable. The upper teeth are overcrowded and one tooth is a little forward. The bottom set are all fine and straight but wide. My question is, do i really need invisilign- i want my bite to be corrected but I was wondering if i could just get the treatment without it for now, and maybe get invisilign later? Thanks

The healthiest choice is orthodontics! However, cosmetic dentistry may be an option for you. Most of my patients who seek smile enhancement are adults and opt for cosmetic dentistry versus braces because of the time it takes. Cosmetic dentistry will be more costly.

After browsing the website I think the Six Month Smile is the best brace for me. Although it is the cheapest brace I still would not be able to afford it. Hi I do not think it will be possible on the NHS. At the consultation the dentist would examine your teeth and discuss option with you. Many practice have payment plans to allow to spread the cost from 1 to 5 yrs.
