I Struggle To Keep My Dentures In As I Have Emphysema And Cough A Lot. What Can I Do To Hold Them In Place?

Q.
Hi Dr Moore. I am female and aged 63. I have emphysema and I cough continuously, I have recently had my teeth out due to gum disease and have partial plate both top and bottom. I have tried to wear the dentures from May but I continually gag and end up being sick, I am lucky if I can keep them in for an hour. My dentist says he can not take any more from the top plate and if he did there would not be enough plate left to hold them in. If it’s not the gag reflex it’s the cough, please help. Thank you for your time.

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. Dental implants could be your answer if you’re a suitable candidate. You could use them to hold the plate in place and to reduce its size so it doesn’t cover the roof of your mouth and make you gag. Perhaps search for a local implant dentist for a consultation. In the meantime it might be helpful for you to look into information in treatments such as All-on-four through this website. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
