I still have pain after root canal treatment.

Q.
had a root canal done wednesday. Had had a lot of pain b4 and a rather large lump which had started weeping pus b4 treatment. Worried that as i still have a small tender lump on the gum this treatment may be unsuccessful and the infection may not go. I am on antibiotics which finish in 4days time. What do you think ? this tooth had been playing me up for sometime but every-time i had an xray nothing ever showed up until the lump appeared. Thanks
A.
Hi I think you should go back to the dentist who performed the treatment for you so that he oe she can assess the problems. Things normally do take some time to settle. Did you have the treatment doen by a specialist Endodontist? If not and if you have any doubts then maybe try to find a specialist for an opinion.

Best wishes

Mark

Root canal treatment is done when decay will likely damage or has already killed a tooth. During a root canal, a dentist or periodontist removes the pulp from the center of a tooth and fills the pulp cavity. This can prevent the development of a painful infection in the pulp that may spread to other teeth.

I had severe pain in tooth which I had root canal/crown 13 years ago. Next to that is another tooth I had root canal/crown, but the crown broke, and I never had replaced. For some reason the tooth with the older root canal was very sore. I have been taking Keflex 500 mg. for 2 days, and have noticed the tooth is better, but my face has swollen quite a bit. My face was only swollen a little before taking the antibiotic.

You have an abscess and may need the tooth extracting or the root canal treatment redone.

hi i have a tooth which has a very large filling in then it got infected. My tooth is now wobbling and squeaks when i eat. the denist said i need a root canal and then i crown but will it help if the tooth is wobbly? i don’t want to spend money on a crown if my tooth is going to fall out. should i get an implant instead? could it be the infection that has caused my tooth to become wobbly? i m not sure what to do for the best! thanks

the infection often makes the tooth feel loose and once its gone after root canal it should tighten back up

Hi there, I recently visited the dentist and I had been having some minor pain on my back molars. My dentist said that I have to have root canal treatment and I am a little worried about this as it sounds quite bad. Could you please give me more information on this treatment and why you think I need it? I had lots of questions but I was so embarrassed at the time that I just went very quiet. I am due to have the treatment in the next month and I am really worried. thank you for reading my problem and thank you very much.

Root canal treatment sounds bad but is a simple painless procedure. You need root canal treatment when the nerve of the tooth is infected by decay, fracture, trauma or wear. If you have questions you should contact the dentist to discuss them.

It can happen . Doesn’t mean the treatment has been a success or failure either way , time will tell. If it doesn’t settle you are likely to lose the tooth if the pain arises from the tooth that has had the root canal , but it can settle.

I have had root canal treatment on a tooth 30 years ago.It is now causing me pain. Why is this as I thought the nerve was removed? I feel it may be the early start of an abscess as I have earache sporadically but my doctor has given my ears the all clear. What could it be please?

Hello You need to get this tooth X rayed to see what is happening underneath it.Jut because it was treated 30 years ago doesn’t mean that nothing else has to be done for life. There may have been some leakage of bacteria into the roots causing a recurrent infection.Techniques have changed a lot in the past few years and this treatment may now be failing. You may need some antibiotics pending a diagnosis and treatment plan for this tooth.See your dentist soon.

Please help I am at breaking point. Horrendous pain on my lower left jaw line. My dentist did root canals on my upper back 2 teeth before having them both extracted. I have also been on 4 x lots of antibiotics and the pain is still awful. Dentist has advised she doe’s not think she can do any more and is referring me to get my jaw checked! However I believe this pain is due to bad gum infection, my chin area is tender to touch. I have lumps over my gums! I need a second opinion as I can go on no further after 8 weeks off pain.

I would need to know a lot more. IF the pain has only been there recently then there could be an infective element, either bacterial or Viral (which would explain why it may not respond to antibiotics). That said, unexplained pain should be investigated and a Jaw joint check sounds sensible.
