I Show At Least An Inch Of My Gums When I Smile. Can You Advice Me On Which Treatment Options Are Available To Rectify This?

Q.
Hi there. I’m a 35 year old woman.

I’m concerned with my ‘gummy smile’ which causes me to feel self conscious. I show at least just over half an inch when fully smiling. Can you advise which treatments options are available to me and recommend the best UK dentists to carry out those treatments. A few years ago I had some cosmetic work to cover acid erosion at the top of my 2 front teeth. Would this limit my options? Many thanks.

A.
Thanks for your questions.

Gummy smiles can be caused by many things – teeth size, bone thickness, thin lips, hyperactive smile muscles etc.

So before treatment can be suggested we need to diagnose the underlying problem or combinations of problems.

Treatment options include:

Gum lift, either with just laser or with bone removal, Veneers, crowns, bonding, lip repositioning surgery, jaw bone surgery, orthodontics or botox. Or it could mean a combinations of all of these. My advice is to see a cosmetic dentist who has treated lots of these cases, such as myself or my team here in Harley Street, and see what they say. Regards, Mark.
