I Recently Had Four Crowns Fitted But Have Come To The Conclusion They Are Too Long, Is It Possible To Have Them Shortened?

Q.
Hi, I’ve recently had 4 crowns fitted on my upper 4 front teeth.

I thought they looked okay before I had them cemented in place but after a few days with them I’ve come to the conclusion they are too long. Other people have commented on this also. They are also brighter than my other teeth, but this was not so noticeable in the dentist chair and I know that can not be fixed now.

I was wondering is it possible to have Zirconia crowns shortened and reshaped at the bottom and if so by how much, 1mm maybe?

A.
Hi. As you quite rightly stated, it will not be possible to alter the shade of the crowns but it should be possible to alter the length (with in reason). The amount that will be able to be removed will very much depend on the thickness of the crowns and also their appearance. If the dentist has incorporated a lot of characterisation in the tip portion of the crown, then this will be lost if they are reduced. I have had a similar situation and I agreed with the patient to reduce the length in small increments over a number of visits until they were happy. The reason being, that it is easy to reduce the length but impossible to put it back. Hope this helps. Dr Marcus Gambroudes.
