I need treatment for teeth staining but have a fear of dentists. What can I do?

Q.
I spent years in the forces but despite this I have a fear of dentists and therefore have not been to a dentist for over 25 yrs. I feel my smile and teeth are holding me back in my career, they are all in tact but discoloured and stained and not a smile anyone would be proud off.
The trouble is I can not afford to correct this are there options as I do feel it is holding my career back?
A straight perfect smile is as much of importance as clean polished shoes I have tried everything to clean my teeth to no avail and I see treatment would cost thousands of which is beyond my reach.
I don’t know what to do or where too turn as i think it is now out of control.
A.
It depends on the type or staining and the reasons as to what treatment would be best for you. As you say your teeth are intact, it may be an option to have a simple scale and polish with a hygienist. If the staining is more substantial micro abrasion may be possible where a sand type substance is blasted at the teeth at high speed and takes out deeper stains. Another option is whitening, this is not suitable for everyone, as in all of the treatments, so consult your dentist for the best option. I would estimate these treatments being in the hundreds rather than the thousands.
