I’m have a large fear of going to the dentist, but my teeth need sorting out. Is there anything that can help?

Q. I really don’t know how I can make the first step in getting my teeth sorted out. I’ve not been to a dentist for about 12 years and some of the front ones have areas of brown on them although none seem actually loose. They look so unsightly and I’m so ashamed of them as no one I know of my age (early 40s) has teeth that look like mine. What is the easiest first step I could make that would enable me to actually be able to set foot over the threshold of a dental surgery and overcome the fear I have of a first appointment? And secondly in very broad terms if someone hasn’t been to a clinic for so many years – how many appointments would I be likely to need to put things right. Thank you: even writing this email has been a huge step for me.,
A. I’m not sure what I can do to help you make an appointment however you should ask tour friends for a recommendation so that you will feel the dentist your going to is someone you trust. Perhaps they could even go with you on your first visit?

Not really sure what to say but to find a sympathetic dentist who may be able to offer you treatment under sedation

i have 5 crowns on the top which are discoloured at the top and also dentures. i have 1 denture at the top where all the crowns are. im more or less happy to have the dentures on the bottom jaw as they dont cause any problems and im very nervous going to the dentist. could yoy give me an approximate idea of the cost of all this. i wonder if i could have a general anaesthetic as i really have problems going to the dentist hence the bad teeth

You can have sedation but you just need to find a good dentist who will put you at ease.

Back in 1980 I had gone to a dentist that I had never seen before. I had a tooth that was missing going from the back of my mouth from the eye tooth. She advised me that I should get a bridge and crown done. She explained that my other teeth would twist and turn to try and fill the gap, so I agreed for this to be done.I did not know at that moment that they had to drill two of my teeth down to pegs. When the bridge a crown were ready it was put in. Not until I had moved I noticed that were the eye tooth was that there was a small gap between my gum and tooth. I thought that it was natural, and no other dentist said anything about it. In 1995 I ended up losing everything everything right to the gum. And lately I have thought about having this proceedure done, but I definately do not want to be awake when this is performed, and I would like to know if you are put under or not.

If you’re thinking of dental implants then they can be placed under sedation, this will help you relax during the procedure

Google in Sedation services in dentistry , ask your primary health care trust (PCT ) . Getting root treatments on molars can be a lottery , and you may have difficulty getting this under IV sedation on the NHS .
