A. Hi S,

I am sorry to hear about the problems you described.

Firstly since you are obviously fed up with the way your teeth are you need to get yourself to a dentist. Problems like the ones you described can be treated often with simple treatments such as a deep clean.

If we address the problems you mentioned in one by one you might get a good idea of your options.

Staining on your teeth
can be due to developmental abnormalities so despite you trying to scrub clean the teeth as much as you can it never works. Problems like this can be treated with teeth whitening of the teeth or even veneering. This essentially masks the underlying stain.

Again your teeth being yellow is generally the result of more of the dentine layer of your teeth showing through the thin superficial enamel layer of your teeth. The enamel is a translucent blue tone which over the dentine layer normally gives a white colour. However when the dentine is so dark you end up with a yellow colour to your teeth. I always recommend patients stay away from whitening toothpastes, as they are usually an abrasive substance that strips the enamel layer. Using these substances over time thins the enamel layer so much that the dentine layer becomes more apparent and you end up getting yellower teeth despite using the whitening toothpaste!! The first line treatment for this is again whitening since it address the about 2 problems and it is safe for your teeth as it does not remove any enamel.

Plaque build up is something that some people are more prone to then others. This seems very much the case for you. It is difficult for you to distinguish between plaque and calculus (tartar). Plaque is something which builds up following eating and can easily be removed off the teeth with brushing. Calculus however is plaque which has remained in contact with the teeth and saliva for a longer period of time. The plaque hardens and sets like concrete on your teeth, so despite your best efforts to remove it, you just cant do it properly with a toothbrush. In situations like this, a visit to the dentist for a decent scale should remove this off the teeth and give you a fresh start! It may take a couple of days for your gums to recover from this experience but you will notice the difference. Getting yourself a decent electric toothbrush will take most of the burden off you and allow you to maintain the state of the teeth. – Using the brush before the visit to the dentist will not have a result you will be happy with since the brushes are great at maintaining the teeth and gums but unfortunately fall short at removing calculus that has been there for some time.

The simple treatments i have mentioned should really give you a boost and restore your confidence and in a relatively inexpensive manner! I hope my advice helps but feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Regards

I had implants at a UK practice which I have since been told were done badly and therefore have failed. The dentist was foreign and has since gone back to another country. The practice says he was on a self employed contract (which I was not told) and they are not therefore liable. I can’t afford the cost ofApprox £27,000 to have it all redone. Is this practice of employing dentists usual and should I have been told before I agreed to the treatment. I feel I have been conned What should I do and should other patients be warned?

You need to take this up with the practice principle as they should have better advice for you than this, however if the practice is now owned by someone new there isn’t much you can do.
