I have a severe overbite will invisalign work

Q. I had traditional metal braces as a teenager to straighten my very misaligned teeth. I am now in my late 20s, and have developed quite a severe overbite in the past few years. I am really reluctant to wear metal braces again but would like to correct this forward drifting of my teeth; would invisalign be suitable to realign my teeth? I appreciate that you have not seen me, but would you be able to give an estimate of the time it might generally be expected to take to rectify this type of problem? On one website I have read, it gave an estimate of four months. Considering I wore metal braces for eighteen months, this seems a very short time in comparison. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

A. I am sure you would be suitable for invisalign treatment something that can be assessed when you have a consultation. It is true some treatments can take take as little as 4 months however I think 12-14 months will probably be a more realistic timescale. It is very important that once your teeth are moved they are RETAINED, this is the key to ensuring your teeth do not drift back. Retainers can be clear mouthguards you wear at night or a small metal wire placed behind your teeth. It is very important that when you go for a consultation you ask about the retainer process.
I hope this helps you.

Hi, I have a somewhat related issue. I wore my Invisalign for a full year, my top teeth are a lot straighter although its still a small overbite which I’m fine with. My dentist originally used metal wire to retain my top teeth, but because of the constant rubbing from my bottom teeth as you can imagine due to overbite, the wire failed. Is the clear mouth guard you mentioned above the only other option? How is that different from wearing my last Invisalign aligner? I recommended filing my bottom teeth a little so they would stop rubbing the wire, my dentist rejected that without even explaining, would that work in your opinion? I have metal wire for my bottom teeth after invisalign which worked really well. I will much prefer using metal wire to retain my top teeth. Thanks a million if you can help me 🙂
