Q.

A.
You would have to sort the gum disease out before considering veneers, I would suggest a consultation with a specialist Periodontist.

I am 31 and was diagnosed with periodontis about 7 years ago. The dentist said that about the time that I was 40 all my teeth would be gone if I didnt get treatment. I was shocked because I had14 fillings put in at the age of 18 and 2 crowns and thought I was only going to replace the crowns that fell. He said that there were 3 procedures needed to treat the disease. It was very costly and the first procedure maxed my insurance out for that year so I never returned. When I got pregnant 3 years ago and went for a cleaning to another dentist, I mentioned it to him and he said my everything looked perfectly normal so I didnt worry about it any longer. I thought that maybe he was just money hungry and wanted to take all that my insurance offered. I went to the dentist for the first time since then and they took x-rays and done a cleaning. The dentist said everything looked good and healthy they just want to replace the crown. I mentioned to her about the gum disease and she says, “Yea it looks like you have a little bone loss.” She said it like it was nothing and I’m wondering would she have said anything if I wouldn’t have mentioned it. Y would everything be normal but I still have gum disease?

Dear Enquirer, I cannot presume what your dentist would have said or not said, but please do go back for some reassurance if you are not totally comfortable and feel you need more explanation. Regards

Hello there., Two of my bottom teeth have become crocked and have “veered” to the left. This has gradually happened over a couple of years. I have recently had a series of general dental treatments, hygiene, a filling and a root canal and with them a few x-rays. The x-rays showed that the bottom teeth roots have come away from my jaw and it is the gums that are holding them in position. This was due partly to gum disease, which is just about cleared and the gums are in a much better condition and the teeth themselves are still in a good condition I am becoming more and more “self conscious” about it as there is a noticable gap now and it is generally quite uncomfortable. Can you let me know what treatment I could get to put this right and what sort of price range I would be looking at. Many thanks

If the teeth have extensive bone loss then removal of the teeth and replacement with a denture, bridge or implants might be the best cosmetic option

THANKS

If your gums are bleeding I would advice that you see a hygienist. The hygienist would help and give advice on how to make your gums healthier.

Yes but you will need careful planning to see if you have enough bone to create the type of aesthetic result you find acceptable

I had veneers done in the U.S. about four years ago but now live in London. One of the front teeth has been very sensitive on and off since the veneers were put in. The discomfort is increasing and often give an achy sensation after certain food and this particular tooth often bleed as well at the gums. Can they be leaking? Is there anyway I can fix this myself? I am unemployed and don’t know how to cover the cost to get this sorted out.

Mekhi Says :

It sounds like there could be some underlying problems with them. If finances are a problem then try your local NHS dentist. If they are leaking or there is a problem with the nerves of the teeth then only a dentist would be able to help with this Best wishes

Hi, I have a slightly twisted in front tooth and its giving me a gap between my teeth. My dentist suggested a vaneer on it … the cheaper one not porcelain as its too much money for me. Reading about vaneers im now worried if im doing the right thing having a healthy tooth filed down and knowing it will need replacing after a few years. Can you give me some advice please.

I suffered gingivitis about 6 years ago and as a result receeding gums have made my 2 front teeth move to the right side leaving a gap one side and overlapping the other side. I have become increasingly subconsious and try not to smile, I am also very nervous about dental treatment. I now wish to do something to rectify this but am unsure what the best treatment for me would be. I am 49 years old and could possibly afford up to £1000 for treatment, Do you have any idea what the best treatment for me would be? yours hopefully,

Its hard for me to tell without seeing you but you could consider veneers to line the teeth up or a brace. Your budget might not be quite enough so shop around and try to find a good local dentist who can give you a few options regards

You need to get this checked by your dentist. They could be deciduous (baby) teeth that have fallen out late, if they are adult molars then you may have a significant problem, however this is highly unlikely.

I have 4 teeth top and 6 teeth lower, So i am guessing i would need quite a few implants. I have searched the internet hoping to get a reasonable price but they differ so much it is a bit confusing. When i look at the prices abroad they seem to be a lot cheaper than here in England. The other thing i need to know is where can i go to see what choices i have got, should i go abroad to get my implants? and would my treatment be as good as in the UK. Thanks

Hi ive got a gap between my two front teeth its about 3 to 4 mm and was just wondering what the possibilities of closing it was and what are my options if there is any.one of my front teeth is a crown though which ive only had done for a few months would this cause problems as it not a real tooth and wouldnt be able put much pressure on it to close the gap.im not to keen on surgery so if i can help it would like a pain free option if there is one.if there isnt then i would be happy to have surgery. Thanks

April 5th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Alison Says :

The options include a brace to close the gap or to veneer or crown the uncrowned tooth and recrown the new crowned tooth making the crowns slightly wider to close the space. Its hard to tell you what will work best for you so seek out a cosmetic dentist in your area for a consultation.

Whitening won’t help your recession, you’ll need periodontal treatment first then consider veneers once everything has settled down

My 16 year old son has an unerupted canine tooth. His milk tooth was removed 12 months ago to stimulate the eruption but this has not worked. We have been referred to an orthodontist but my son is adamant that he does not want braces and is happy to live with the gap. Apart from a small procedure followed by braces is there any other treatment that could take place that avoids braces? Kind regards.

Susie Says :

Hi,
I have just been diagnosed by a private dentist that I have severe gum disease. The doctor did not mention periodontal but I assume this is what it is. He told me that I have lost too much bone for implants and that there would only be a slim chance if a bone graft working and so my only option was to extract ALL my teeth and have dentures, yet when I research on line, anything I read or any pictures I see leads me to believe that my case is not that severe. My symptoms are bleeding gums, and I am very conscious of my breath odourand also have slight movement with my upper front teeth when I physically push them myself.
My question is this, if I had the disease treated to the point of having no more trace of it, would I still have to have all my testy extracted and if not would I still be able to have veneers ?

Eve Says :

I have periodonitis and have been advised by my dentist, hygienist and periodontist not to have veneers as this can make the disease worse. It was explained like this, veneers are like false nails, so you have your natural teeth filed and the veneer placed. This is all good and sounds great, easy as pie, however, if gums continue to recede, which they are likely to do, as they do with age anyway, then a noticeable gap will appear and this is something that a veneer cannot cover up forever. Also, you cannot floss your teeth properly with veneers and they harbour plaque which helps cause the disease in the first place. Having a great cleaning regime is vital in keeping the disease at bay. I was today advised that a gum veneer can help with the aesthetics of teeth which I will now investigate.
