I have a black line showing at the top of my crown, what should I do?

Q.
I had post crowns fitted some years ago on my top two front teeth. A year ago I had root canal treatment, and since then there is a highly visible black line between my crowns and my gums – I think it is the metal from the crowns.

I was informed that I am not able to have the post crowns replaced and would therefore like to know what my options are as I am becoming increasingly upset about this black metal showing.

thank you for your time and any help you can give

A.
Sometimes it is recession showing a discoloured root and others it is the crown margin as you mention. In both cases replacing the crown with an all ceramic crown that sits just under the gum margin will hide the problem for a while. If the root is discoloured, eventual recession will cause the problem to reappear, timing is partly down to good brushing tecniques.
