I have 3 broken teeth after a eating disorder teeth that stick out and a large gap?

Q. Hi, I am a 24 year old student nurse and i am in utter despair about my smile. I have three broken teeth, whihc keep on crumbling. This occured after having a mild eating disorder a few years ago. I also have teeth which stick out, which are large in appearance and i have a front gap. I am a smily person and am desperate to be able to smile properly without feeling embarressed. I am also concerned as i am aware that dental treatment is expensive..what financial help do you offer. Thankyou. Kind regards, L

A. Hello L

The most common problem caused by eating disorders is from acid erosion dissolving the tooth surface. Once the harder outer layer has been removed the inner layer can wear away more easily. If this is the main reason for your teeth crumbling then simple tooth coloured filling will protect, restore function and look good. As you want to change the shape and appearance of your front teeth I suspect you will need to crown them, however to keep costs down you might do a medium term fix with filling.

Check out your hospital personnel dept for employee insurance schemes, teeth ones are common. Often they do have limits on the value of a claim and are generally more costly for the average person. However crucially for you occupational schemes are generally worked out as risk across the whole company, they do not discriminate if you need a lot of treatment soon after joining. Often you have to be a member for 3 months before starting a claim.

Rules about giving advise about insurance prevent me fro giving more direct advice. I am aware of BHSF, HSA, & Westfield offering individuals policies outside of a company scheme. They work at lower benefits but lower costs. For more schemes try searching “dental insurance “ on google.

As student nurse we would give you a 20% discount. A full price list is on our website as a PDF file on the right side of the info page.

Good luck with this & your studies
