I had braces for an overbite and not happy with the result can I have invisaline

Q. Hi i am a43 year old woman who has just had her braces off after 18 months i had the treatment for a very large overbite. but i am not happy with the result as i still have a really large overbite and was wondering if i had a couple of teeth out from the back and had invisaline braces would my teeth move back any more as they are still resting on my bottom lip, i have spent 3000 on this treatment and i just feel like it was a waste of time and money, and can you please tell me at the moment i an wearing essex retainers and have been for nearly 5 months but my teeth are still not setting in the jaw bone if i leave the retainers out for a hour when i eat i struggle to get them back on.this cant be right. can anyone please help me with this problem as im so depressed i was expecting at least some change in how i look, and feel as if it was all a waste of time and money, i would be willing to do anything to change my overbite and get my teeth to sit behind my lip as i feel so uncomfortable about the way i look thankyou for your help

A. First of all, i am very sorry to hear that you feel that the dental treatment you have had has been a waste of money.

There are a number of things to address. The first thing is looking at the previous treatment.

What did the orthodontist who provided you with braces suggest your end result would be before you started treatment? Is the end result what you were told or has there been something which has necessitated the removal of the braces before the end result could be achieved? If you are not happy with your treatment then you should primarily take this up with the orthodontist.

Secondly, the essex retainers should not be so tight after not wearing them for 1 hour. Again speak to the orthodontist about this, and if you cannot settle down with a removable retainer, i suggest trying a bonded retainer.

From your description it seems that your top jaw is positioned further ahead of your lower jaw, and there a number of procedures which can attempt to correct this. A few surgical procedures aim to correct the skeletal discrepancies and allow for a more pleasing profile. Your orthodontist should in conjunction with a maxillo-facial surgeon be able to provide you with more details and be able to arrange a consultation with you.

For a non surgical approach, the removal of teeth at the back would create space to attempt to move the teeth back, but what you might find is that you are limited to the distance you can go back, since the teeth will only move within the limitations of the jaws. Invisalign will not offer any more significant advantages over traditional orthodontics – apart from superior cosmetics, so again any problems experienced with the traditional orthodontics may again be faced with the invisalign.

An alternative to the orthodontics, should you be prepared to have your teeth prepared is to consider treatments such as crowns and veneers. The preparations may be extensive and you may find that root canal treatment may be one of the complications but it is certainly a way to correct the alignment of teeth and redefine the lip position.

Without a clinical view, i cannot provide more options but my first advice is to speak to the orthodontist who treated you, as if you were unhappy with the result at the removal of the braces then he should have been able to provide reasons as to why he could not improve on the result.

I hope my advice helps.

Regards

i have the same problem with teeth resting on my lip, i am 53 and have had braces in the past, teeth removed and all of that, but my teeth have marked my lip and i am becoming more and more consious about it. I have somehow trained myself toput my teethinside my lip but i am worried about my bitten lips, could i have plastic surgery to repair my lip?

I dont feel and look right after 3 years of invisialign. I now regret the whole procedure. I want my old set of teeth back. Though they were crooked they were comfortable. If I stop wearing retainer will my teeth go back to its original position? Has anyone done that?
