I had a bridge fitted nine months ago and I am in constant pain, what should I do?

Q.
Hi, I had a bridge fitted nearly 9 months ago and have not had one day with either discomfort or pain. I have had extensive root treatment to the two teeth either side of the gap. I cannot cope with this pain any longer and am nearly at the point of having the bridge taken out (if the dentist I was referred to is happy to do this). I keep asking myself if this is the right thing (as this has been very expensive and painful) to do as I am convinced that there was nothing wrong with the two exisiting teeth but there’s something ‘wrong’ with the bridge itself. Could it be the bridge itself causing the problems or is the pain from existing teeth/crowns?

Thanks.

A.
It could potentially be that your bite is now not correct and this could certainly cause some discomfort. I would advise you to seek a second opinion from a cosmetic or restorative dentist who has experience in correcting the bite before electively removing the bridge. it would be wise also to have the integrity of the root canals checked also, especially if you did not have these done with a root canal expert (endodontist)

It doesn’t sound normal so speak to your dentist again as recession doesn’t really cause severe pain

Hello i am having a dental implant inserted in the position of my front left incisor. My tooth has been extracted and i now have a temporary sticky bridge currently in its place. However the gum above the temporary bridge hasbegun to recede and i was wondering whether a gum graft could replace thereceding gum? Otherwise im going to have one tooth which looks longer thanthe rest.

The new dentist thought there was decay in my bridge and replaced it, but several issues arose during treatment signalling to me that I was not going to be able to feel confident in some of the advice he has given me.I would like to start again to see if there is a chance that replacing thebridge with an implant and two crowns is an option and to assess where I go from here with a crown that fell out during the treatment of my bridge.

Dear Dr Caplan, Congratulations on a very good web site. I am 35 and have an overjet, which has never been much of an issue functionally, but I am increasingly becoming aware of it from cosmetic point of view. Perhaps, my parents should have sorted it, but they still maintain that there is nothing wrong with my teeth. I appreciate that you will need to examine me in orderto give an opinion but, do you think is it possible to something without wearing ever so conspicuous metal braces. I have done some reading on E2809CinvisalignE2809D. Is it something that you frequently undertake for overjet at my age? Regards

I have a temporary ‘flipper’ that i’ve had now for almost a year. I needa bridge that will take care of the one missing tooth, but in total will be 4 teeth. I am excited because I hate my smile, and years of being in an abusive relationship broke my front teeth, and after years of fillings to repair, I am looking forward to beautiful smile. My insurance covers zero ofthis. Can give me a price, and perhaps a pymt plan option?

Hi I have a maryland bridge for an upper lateral incisor. This became detached last week. I’ve asked a couple of dentists for their opinion and instead of recementing the bridge in place, they have recommended implants. One the reasons given was that reattaching the bridge to an adjacent tooth would wear down the enamel, albeit in a tiny proportion. So continual reattachment is not a good idea. Please can you give me your thoughts.

I think an implant is the best solution most of the time. A conventional bridge involves cutting down your adjacent teeth. Maryland usually doesn’t but will fall off fairly regularly.

I have had a crown for over 30 years (upper front tooth). I had this done in South Africa. All dentist I have visited believe this to be an exellent crown. Esthetically, I am not impressed. More recently the balck margin is becoming noticable. I am due to have a new one. What would be the most natural looking crown, so that you could not tell that it was a crown – with respect to translucency and fit at the margin. A friend has mentioned in ceram or procera crown. I would welcome your opinion. Many thanks and kind regards.

I prefer E-max for a crown but it depends on the colour of the stump underneath. Visit a good cosmetic dentist they should be able to offer you several choices to get the best match
