I Had A Bad Experience With A Dentist And Have A Very Painful Tooth. Will The Dentist Make The Pain Worse Poking Around At It?

Q.
Hello Dr,
I am 6 1/2 months pregnant and my upper back tooth is quite sore. in fact i am in intense pain everynight. Before pregnancy this tooth has a hole in it and a few years ago it gave me problems. However, I have maintained it myself as I had a horrid experience with a dentist when I was 19. I am 28 years old now. Can you advise me on what i should do. I am currently taking amoxcillin 250mg three times a day prescribed by my GP. Any advice and possible dental treatment that I could get when pregnant would be most appreciated. My concern is that after a trip to the dentist and poking at this tooth, i will be left is worst pain than i am in now.
Many thanks,
A.
Hello. Thank you for your question. However it is very difficult to answer without seeing you.

My first advice would be to visit your dentist. As frightening as it may seem that is the best way forward to correcting this problem. Ask you dentist not to use the probe to check the tooth, this may be better for you. Also with regards to treating this when pregnant, there are two schools of thought on whether pregant ladies can have local anaesthetic administered if is advisable for you to check wity your midwife if this is ok for you. If it is ok, I would get whatever treatment done as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.
