I Grind My Teeth And Have Been Told To Wear A Mouth Guard Throughout The Day, Can Anything Else Be Done?

Q.
Hello,

Could you please tell me the options available for me? I chronically grind my teeth and have worn them down and they are starting to break up, mainly the upper left ones but also the other and it is causing me some pain. I have been given a mouth guard to wear during the night and have been told I should start wearing it through the day as well but that is an option I would like to avoid as it is quite unsightly and hinders my speech.

Thank you.

A.
Usually the first step is to wear a bite splint which not only protects your teeth from the grinding but more importantly (if made in a certain way with the jaw in a certain position), helps to determine the source of the problem. It’s designed to be diagnostic as well as preventative.

Quite often (but not always) there are elements of the way the teeth come into contact that can instigate the grinding habits and in some circumstances when these are removed, the grinding and it’s effects reduce. Teeth can be altered or moved or both to help reduce these ‘interferences’. They can then be rebuilt with bonding, with porcelain onlays, veneers or crowns.

My advice is to go and see a dentist who has a lot of experience in dealing with such problems, such as ourselves, and seek further advice.

Kind regards, Mark.
