I dont want a mouth full of metal …do clear braces work as well?

Q. Dear Dr Patel, I was offered braces as a teenages as i have ‘fangs’ on my top row of teeth and a very uneven bottom set, but told by an orthodontist I didn’t really need them. My regular dentist has never let this go however, and I am starting to agree. I am 21 and don’t want to have a mouth full of metal when I finish Uni and apply for city based jobs in London. The gaps between my top and bottom rows are too noticable to me in photos though and I would like to do something about them. I have read about the clear braces that are like a thin mouthgard and also about the traintracks that fit around the back of the teeth. But do these actually work as well and are they, along with the regular check ups, hidiously expensive? Thanks!

A. Orthodontics is a great way to improve the appearance of your own teeth. Whereas metal braces are still the most commonly used, I pesonally have been using “invisible orthodontics” for a number of years now with excellent results. A number of my clients work in the media or in jobs where they have to speak pubically and they all say no one notices they are wearing them. The biggest advantages of invisible orthodontics are they are comfortable, you can remove them when you eat so you keep your teeth and gums healthy and they are virtually invisible. Active treatment times vary from 3 months to 18 months. Finances packages are available to help spead costings and are 0% at our practice.
I hope this helps.

Hi, i was having the same problem.. 21 and facing braces…eww! i went with invisalign and i am so happy now my teeth are straight!! Very quick and virtually painless!! They are amazing! I doubted them as you think, ‘how can a bit of plastic do the job?’, but my goodness they work better than fixed braces! My sister had fixed braces and hated them and they took ages and ruined the condition of her teeth with the glue etc, but these are amazing! Go for it!!! I never used to smile at all, but now i smile all the time and am constantly looking at my teeth in the mirror! Worth every penny!! I had alot of work to be done top and bottom and it cost me £4000 but we done it on a good finance.. totally worth it!

Dr. R. Grover Says :

I guess pain is subjective Leanne, different people experience different levels of pain. some people descibe the pain as more of a discomfort whereas ffor others it is more severe. If you do have any problems with pain when wearing braces the best thing to do is consult your dentist with any issues.

I grind and clench my teeth. Will the uneven surface of the aligners wear down my teeth? It seems pretty rough!

Hi, I certainly do not believe that aligners will wear down your teeth. In fact, for those patients who do have clenching and/or grinding habits, we find that by wearing aligners you are reducing the chances of further damage to the existing natural teeth whilst the aligners are in place. Many thanks

Hi, I removed my braces about 8 years ago. after the braces were removed, I noticed that each tooth was very shiny where the brace bracket was placed. so there is a shiny cirle on all the teeth. I had my teeth whitened about 5 years after and all these shiny circles did not whitened at all. so I am left with blotchy areas. I went backl to my ortho and he said he doesnt see these shiny areas. Even though, prior to him coming into the room, his assistance saw them right away when told her about them. I insisted that its obivous that it is there. He then decide to tell me it could be because I was nnot very good at brushing my teeth during my braces course. However, I told him that I brushed and floshed twice a day! He then said it could be glue residue. He advised that I go back to my dentist to get it cleaned off. I went back to my dentist and he notices these shiny blotches as well. Despite cleaning them and scrubbing them, he does not know why either. I would love to whiten my teeth again but I am very scared that it will get blotchy again. Please help! I dont know how to get rid of them.

Dear doctor, I was wondering about iBraces. I’m 26 and I live in England. The thing is that I’m flight attendant and don’t have much time “on ground”. Are you yourself an iBraces provider? How long does it take to order the braces? Thanks a lot! Regards

I’m not sure what these are but guess its just a brand name. Perhaps search on their website for a dentist who provides these close to you

hello i would just like to ask how long does it take for the pain of invisalign braces to wear off? I have had my invisalign for a week now and i still have an aching pain in my teeth, which i guess means it’s working but is just incredibly uncomfortable! Will the pain start to subside in the 2 week do you think? I generally don’t take painkillers, but if the pain doesn’t go down i may need to! thanks for reading and any help you can give

Hello yes the first week is normally quite bad _ it will get better- but and you shouldn’g get quite the same pain again when you go to the next aligner. If it gets unbearable- do go back to your dentist
