I Am Terrified Of Dentists And I Have Tooth Decay And A Large Gap Between My Front Teeth. Could I Be Sedated Before Treatment Commences?

Q.
Hello Dr Patel. I am a mental health patient as I have schizo-affective disorder which is a mood disorder which means depression with a few traits of schizophrenia. I am terrified of dentists and I haven’t been to the dentist for quite a while. I have a big gap between my two front teeth and problems with decay. It really bothers me a lot but I am 40 now. Is it possible for me to be put to sleep in a hospital dentistry department and how are they going to fix the gap in my teeth? Thank you.
A.
Hello. Thank you for getting in touch. Dental phobia is a common problem for many people. Sedation is available through many practices. You need to ask for a referral to a community dentist so they can treat you. Hopefully they should be able to put you to sleep. I would need to see your condition in person with X-rays taken to fully understand the extent of your dental condition. The usual treatment options for gaps are braces, veneers and cosmetic bonding. Your tooth decay and any other dental conditions should be under control before any cosmetic treatment commences. If you would like further information on these treatments, you can find it through this website. I hope this helps you. Regards, Dr Riten Patel.
