I am in a lot of pain which started with a chipped tooth, what could be the source of pain?

Q.
I had a front tooth root filling in early Nov. Had been chipped & badly cracked umpteen years ago but earlier this year became tender to pressure. Was/got infected. 5 lots of antibiotics, 1 temp crown [the tooth cracked further], umpteen appts for ‘cleaning’ inside & more pain than I thought I could stand. Then endodontic referral [early Dec], different internal medication, and it did improve slightly but still needed full pain relief [max paracetamol & max ibuprofen daily]. Was advised it might ‘settle down’ … hasn’t. Returned to endo in early Jan, refilled again, again did improved slightly but still very painful to any sort of touch & need regular pain relief and now seems to be getting worse again. Have been told it might be phantom nerve pain and not to have tooth out until seen by neurologist, which could take months on NHS. I think it far more likely infection is still lurking although medication keeps is from forming obvious absess or that root is actually cracked as well & I would get relief from extraction. Gums very sore in area too. What is your opinion please ?
A.
It is very difficult to tell you what is going on without seeing you. You may be correct and the tooth could be cracked. An extraction is your only other option.

However, I would recommend that you visit a specialist endodontist who can have a look at your tooth under a microscope. This way they may see something that has been missed prior.
