I Am An NHS Patient But I Pay Charges For A Scale And Polish. Should I Have To Pay Privately For This Treatment?

Q.
Hi Andrew. My dentist refuses to polish my teeth after a ‘scale and polish’ saying this is cosmetic only. Can I insist he polishes them or can you tell me where I can go to get the stains removed? I am an NHS patient but pay the charges for a check up and scale and polish. He will carry out a scale but will not polish the stains off the front of my teeth.

Is it possible to have this done under the NHS or would I have to go private? Thank you.

A.
Hello and thank you for contacting me. I would say that’s quite unusual. Maybe you should look to see a hygienist instead as they might spend a bit more time with you. If they still refuse you should try an alternative dentist in your area until you are happy. A cosmetic dentist should help you with this. If you have a look at a practice website they should have a list of prices for things such as a scale and polish. As a private dentist I am not fully up to date with the latest NHS regulations however. Kind regards, Dr Andrew Moore.
