How Much Should I Pay For My Crown?

Q.
My tooth has broken and I have been advised to have a crown. I will require a root canal and porcelain crown. Could you give me an idea of what sort of cost I would be looking at.
The tooth is the 2nd tooth after my front tooth, so very visible. Could you also recommend what way you think is best to go.
Currently I have a temporary tooth fitted over the remains of my old tooth which is constantly falling out.

Many Thanks.

A.
Thank you for your questions. The cost will very much depend on the quality of the treatment you will receive. For example if the root canal is performed by a specialist in endodontics (root canals) it will likely be more costly. Sometimes after a root canal to get the best result with the crown colour the inside of the tooth has to be bleached. Then the quality of the crown, both in fit and aesthetics and the complexity of the colour match, will determine the cost of the crown. If the crown is made by a master ceramist technician and the colour match is needed to a natural tooth and is very difficult, then the cost will rise. Your expectations of the result will also determine the fee.

There is a chance the tooth might require a post as well. To give you an idea the fees would range from about £1000 to over £3000 dependent on all these variables.

I would advise that a specialist does the root canal and that a cosmetic dentist does the crown, who can show you a portfolio of cases where they colour matched a crown on a tooth that had root canal. Experience and quality of the craftsmanship are key for the best results with these difficult cases.

Hope that helps.
