How Long Does It Take For The Pain To Subside After Dentures Are Fitted?

Q.
I already have full dentures and I would like to know if I should go to the dentist and get them gold plated? How much would it cost to plate all teeth in the denture on both top and bottom with gold?

Other than that cosmetic question I was wondering how long should I be in pain after my teeth have been removed and the dentures placed in my mouth? It has been 3 weeks and the holes where my teeth came out of are still bothering me. The pain I would say is mild but when I try to eat even ice cream I am using my tongue to eat it and when I press against my top denture it is still quite painful. They fit just fine and are staying on very well and I feel the pain where the tooth used to be so I am figuring it is not a fitting issue.

To be honest I am not sure if it is practically possible to ‘gold plate’ a set of plastic dentures, however it is possible to add gold teeth, but this can be quite costly. I usually charge the cost of a conventional gold crown per tooth replaced, which is around £650.

If you are still getting discomfort from from the extraction sites it may be worthwhile booking in to see your dentist for a review. It may be that the dentures need adjustment, however it sounds like you are coping well on the whole.

The period directly following your extractions is when the gums change shape the most and you will probably find your dentures will become looser over the next few months, and we would recommend having a new set made after 3-6 months once everything had healed and settled.
