Do I need my crown removed for root canal treatment?

Q.
When I was about 12 years old, I broke my front tooth playing. So, my dentist placed a temp cap because I also was wearing braces. once my correction was complete (when I was 16 or so), she replaced my cap with a ceramic cap (no root canal). Now I am 25 and during one of my regular check up, a different dentist suggested that I get a root canal treatment and then have a ceramic cap placed. My question is, since it is my front tooth, I am very paranoid about any treatment (coz it affects my looks) and wanted to know if a root canal and a ceramic cap will be a life long solution…are there any drawbacks?
A.
Dear Enquirer,
You would only need a root canal on this tooth if you were getting symptoms of pain or infection on this tooth. This would be confirmed by an examination and xrays.
If you are happy with the colour and shape of your porcelain crown, there is no immediated need to replace it, as it is normally possible to access a root canal,(if required), by drilling a small hole through the back of the crown, hence the crown is not disturbed.
Please go back to your dentist for further clarification, since I don’t have your dental records to make further comment.

Sunita

The question is for my mom aged 67 years and has 4 crowns on her front teeth and has weak teeth, very prone to cavities, some extractions as well in the back of her mouth. Is she a good candidate for getting crown on all her teeth and what problems could she face in case she gets pain or infection in one tooth? Will her whole crown needs to be taken out ? What would you recommend?

Dentist need to see her and assess her teeth and bone and then we could decide whether crowns or implants are a better long term solution.

Is $1200.00 a normal price to pay to have one tooth repaired with a ceramic cap?

Local variations apply but UK costs would be in the region of £450-700. Check that Root canal, and posts are not part of the fee.

I have to have 3 old crowns 20 years old (two front one and left tooth next to front tooth) removed and new ones fitted as I am in the process of of home teeth whitening. I have been told that I may have to root canal also a crown and post, and I am on a budget and I will not know the full cost of treatment can x-rays show what will be needed and do I have to have root canal treatment, plus I am very scared.

You can not always predict if root canal treatment is needed and x-rays can not always tell you. You may want to have your new crowns made and cemented with a weaker cement so if root canal is needed later your dentist could remove them easily carry out any treatment and then re-cement them.

I had a rootcanal, and after a month or so, now I have an earache and I beleave it is because of the root canal, can that be possible? After my rootcanal, i feel my ear clogged and it hurts sometimes. I just have the feeling that it is related with the rootcanal.

My free front teeth have old metal crowns and I am having them replaced with cerami crowns. I did not have root canal the first time and I have had a x-ray which shows no damage to the roots. Will I have to have root canal when I have my old crowns removed, because of he procedure of removing them i.e. taking to much of my old tooth away when removing old crown. Plese put my mind at ease.

It is very difficult to predict you should be prepared that those teeth may need root canal treatment but hopefully they will not.
