Did treatment on son’s teeth make white spots even worse?

Q.

My 20 year old son has white spots on both permanent front teeth since a child. I thought it came because of a preventative antibiotic he was given for 15 months as a two year old for ear infections. The dentist just did microabrasion on them one month ago. It faded a little but the white spots are still there. He ask the dentist yesterday if he could use the white crest strips and he said that would be fine. He started last evening and today the white spots are so white. Because of the microabrasion did this make the white spots worse because the enamel isn’t there as much and is more open and the whitening from the strips filled in. Thanks, mother is concerned.

I’d really need to examine your son in person to advise properly on the best management of the white lesions. Immediately after whitening the white spots become more obvious but this often fades – my usual advice is that long term whitening with a professionally made system like Enlighten can get good results – this can sometimes take up to 6 months. I’d seek the advice of an expert in cosmetic dentistry before proceeding with any more treatment as there could be more relevant solutions depending on the severity and depth of the white spots.

Best wishes
