I Had A Bridge Fitted For Cosmetic Reasons But It’s Changed My Gum-line. Is There Anything I Can Do?

Friday, May 30th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark,

4 years ago I had 2 bridges fitted across my top front teeth for cosmetic reasons, partly to cover a discoloured tooth which had been bumped years before. When these were fitted, my gum line changed massively and looked terrible and I noticed my new tooth was discoloured like the previous one.

Now, 4 years later I am as self conscious of my new smile as I was of my old one and feel like I have paid £3000 for nothing. I have spoken to the dental practice but they have basically told me I have to live with it at the same time as admitting to me that they wouldn’t be happy using my smile as an advertisement for their cosmetic services.

What can I do if anything?

I Had A Tooth Snap Off Weeks Ago. When I’ve Finished With The Antibiotics Do I Go To My Dentist Or The Hospital?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I had an upper right tooth snap off several weeks ago. It caused me no pain at the time, however in the last few days it has and is causing me serious pain and extreme facial swelling. My GP has prescribed antibiotics but the pain remains regardless. What can I take to try to relieve it? When I have finished the antibiotics do I go to a dentist or hospital? There are still remnants of the tooth in the gum but the pain is awful. I have very little funds and need to know where to turn. Thank you for your reply in advance.

I’ve Been Diagnosed With TMJ. I’ve Been Told The Muscles Will Never Get Out Of Spasm. Is This True?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I have been diagnosed with TMJ disorder and it’s due to clenching my teeth after 18 months of trying to get to the bottom of the problem. I have had an X-ray which shows no damage to the jaw joint and it’s been recommended that I ask my dentist for a bite splint which I’m worried will make it worse. The worst thing is the tightness and muffled feeling in my ears. At times it almost feels like my neck is tight and is pulling on everything. I’ve been told the muscles will never get out of spasm once it’s happened and my ears may always be muffled.  Is this true? I hope you can help me with this as it worries me. Thank you for your time.

I’m Too Scared To Visit My Dentist After Years Of Smoking, And Now My Teeth Are Discoloured. Will They Take My Teeth Out?

Friday, November 29th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I hope you can help me as I fear I have a dead front tooth as it is slightly discoloured and feels numb. Also my teeth are going see-through at the bottom. I am too scared to go to a dentist because I fear they will tell me I will lose all my teeth. Please can you tell me what to expect. I am 26 years old and I damaged my teeth with fizzy drinks and cigarettes but the dead tooth is from trauma. I have never had any dental complaints before but again I have not been to the dentist in over ten years.

I Was Head-Butted When I Was Young And This Has Left Me With Many Problems, What Type Of Treatment Should I Be Looking At?

Thursday, September 12th, 2013
Q.

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice really. When I was young I was head-butted in the chin which forced my bottom teeth into my top front teeth and cracked away all the edge of my teeth leaving them rough, uneven and sensitive.
I also have vertical cracks running along all my teeth and they are extremely sensitive to hot and cold even simply breathing in through my mouth causes me pain and discomfort.
The shape of some of my top teeth are also bothering me my incisors are extremely round and chipped and my canines are very sharp and pointy looking.

I have a feeling that this could be down to my hatred of calcium (milk) when growing up as a child and feel that they may not have developed properly.

Any advice?

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013
Q.

My grandson fell and injured one of his front baby tooth it has gone grey there appears to be no infection he is only three and his teeth were beautiful is there anything that can be put on the tooth to make it white. As it will be a least three or four years before the adult tooth appears. My daughter took him to the dentist and they said the tooth may go black there appears to be no infection on the gum. I hope you can help because I feel really bad just having him with a dark tooth and being able to do nothing about it. Thank you very much.

My Tooth Was Almost Knocked Out Playing Hockey And After Treatment It Is Now Turning Black, Help?

Monday, March 11th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr. 3 weeks ago I was playing hockey and my front left tooth was knocked back and almost out with a hockey stick. I was real worried at the time obviously however I was assured it was okay. The dentist put the tooth back in and then braced it to the teeth surrounding it. It has been 3 weeks since the incident and the tooth is now turning black. I was told to keep the brace on for 5 weeks. What are my options as the other front tooth has started to move forward. I do not want a black tooth as I am a business student and I want to have a decent smile as I previously had 3 years of braces. What should I do to have the best smile?

Following A Blow To The Face, My Teeth Are Pushed Back Slightly. Is This Just The Swelling Or Do I Need To See A Dentist?

Monday, January 7th, 2013
Q.

I was struck in the face by a fleeing suspect the other day at work – they had me sent to the ER just to be safe, everything seemed fine other than bruised and swollen, however, since then I’ve noticed that my left front incisor and the tooth next to it (before the canine) are pushed slightly back, and the incisor is angled ever so slightly so the front incisors are no longer even. It’s very annoying because now my lower incisor hits the top one if I’m not super careful while chewing. I’m still swollen (it’s only been about 30 hours since it happened), and none of the teeth seem to be loose at all. Could this be a result of the swelling, or should I be contacting HR to get my teeth looked at as soon as I can open my mouth that far (still too swollen for anyone to get a good look at anything)?
