Hi, I emailed you regarding an infection I had in my gum. I have now realised that the problem I was having was due to a crack in my tooth. The crack was located on my upper front tooth near the gum. The tooth was sensitive to hot and cold temperature, there was pressure in the tooth and there was swelling of the gum. I was taking antibiotics from the doctor but the gum is still swollen slightly. It used to get irritated but the irritation has gone. I went to see my dentist who filled it with a filling. She didn’t seem to know much about cracked teeth. I had this done today and when I had it the pressure seemed to have reduced but as I’m putting pressure on that tooth, the pressure is still there but less than before. I was thinking that the gum needs time to heal because as the tooth was cracked and food was getting inside the gum causing an infection, it didn’t get a chance to heal. Could this mean the pulp is damaged? Should I wait for it to heal or get a second opinion? Thanks.

Monday, February 3rd, 2014Hi Kailesh. My teeth have been sensitive to cold for over a year now so I had it filled but the filling keeps coming out so now it gets more sensitive to cold in my teeth. I don’t like needles, so could you tell me if there is any other way to have it taken out? I’m one those people who don’t do pain or needles, so if there is any other way of taking it out then I would love to hear about it. I don’t like needles because the last time I had a needle in my gums didn’t go down till 2 weeks later. I couldn’t eat or drink or brush my teeth in the morning or night because I was in so much pain and that was about 7 years ago now. People have been telling me it only takes 2 minutes – not even that – but I hope to have it out soon and I’m hoping that it doesn’t happen the way it did 7 years ago. I hope you can help me.

Friday, January 31st, 2014Hello Dr Hughes, about 1 year ago half of my tooth snapped whilst playing rugby so half of my tooth is made out of filling. Will my braces snap the filling off? I am worried, I have had braces for 1 year already but I fear it will snap off. I hate tooth ache, half the tooth is still there and the brace is on both so not all the pressure is on the filling but I’d just like to know if there’s a chance the filling could snap off during my braces treatment. Tuesday, January 28th, 2014Hello Dr Hughes, I am 20 years out and I have a very sweet tooth. My smile is my best asset, however what it hides is terrible. I’ve got many fillings and gold crowns and I want them fixed permanently, so my teeth don’t bleed when I brush. Half of one tooth is absent, but my smile, well my front teeth are amazing. The 4 top right teeth at the back need fixing. The 2 middle back teeth at the top left need fixing. 4 on the bottom two either side need fixing also. I’m really worried, how much will it cost? Is there anything on the NHS that can help me? My confidence is so bad that when it comes to job interviews I back out. Also talking to anyone I avoid it completely it’s really getting me down. I’ve quit smoking and on a healthy diet. I’ve looked online about teeth whitening but they don’t and won’t work on teeth that have holes, fillings or cavities. successful it is as a treatment. I have heard the life of such a treatment is not great and that the finish can be imperfect. I have a tooth which requires a crown but would prefer a Cerec filling if it was comparable. I need a dentist with plenty of experience with the product. Is There Any Chance My Dentist Could Of Left Behind Some Silver Filling In My Tooth?
Thursday, January 2nd, 2014Hi, I had a silver amalgam filling removed today as it made my tooth look totally grey and had it replaced with a white filling. However, there is a silver band around the top quarter of the tooth (although the rest of the tooth looks okay). Does this mean that the dentist may have left some if the old silver filling in and this is now showing through? The old filling was pretty deep so maybe the white filling isn’t deep enough? How can this be rectified? The dentist said it’s just my tooth but it looks like some silver has been left in. Any advice please?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013A bit of my tooth came out whilst having something to eat, towards the back of my mouth but in between two teeth. The hole is right in the middle of the teeth and not on the outside/inside etc, it doesn’t hurt (YET) but I can’t get in the dentist until after the New Year, it looks quite dark and a lot of food is getting trapped inside which I have to keep flossing it out. Is this a sign of decaying, as I only visited my dentist in August this year, surely they should of spotted early signs of decay? I also had a crown fitted and they would of looked at my teeth on different occasions, I don’t know what to do? I don’t want to be unwell for Christmas but I have to wait until after New Year.

I have a front tooth which already has a filling in it, but I have noticed where the filling is there appears to be a spot of some sort, like a brown stain on the tooth. Why is this? Does the filling have to come out and treated to be refilled. The filling has been in there for a few years but now I am worried that I might lose the tooth or the staining might spread. Thursday, December 5th, 2013Hi, I’m currently nearly 5 months pregnant, I have a maternity exemption form and I just wanted to know something, a couple of months after I had my son I was brushing my teeth and the inside corner up to the halfway mark chipped off one of my top front teeth, I never got it looked at because I was always ashamed of it never smiling in front of people and never laughing and so from then a month or two after that it broke up to the top and was more ashamed to let anybody see it. It’s been like this now for around 2 years, would I have to pay for this as it would need a white filling, thanks in advance.
