How long after a tooth is removed can I have an implant?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi

I have had a lower left molar extracted about 7.5 weeks ago as it was cracked. My dentist says that an implant should be placed within 8 weeks of tooth extraction to eliminate bone shrinkage, however my CT scan done yesterday shows bone is still soft around the extraction area and requires more healing, but my dentist is saying that i can have a bone graft to place the abutment quickly as it is likely that the extraction site will not hold the abutment just yet as it is not healed enough. She also says i have to have a temporary bridge to prevent teeth drifting. The whole process seems very rushed to me and is costing £3500 in total which is very expensive. Could I not wait an extra month to eliminate bone grafting and to allow more healing which i need and then have the abutment? and not have a temporary Bridge at all? I just feel I’m being too rushed especially as I am due to go overseas with work for up to 1 year in a couple of weeks and have explained to my dentist i could get this done in Sydney rather than here in the UK once the area heals.

I have a black line showing at the top of my crown, what should I do?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.

I had post crowns fitted some years ago on my top two front teeth. A year ago I had root canal treatment, and since then there is a highly visible black line between my crowns and my gums – I think it is the metal from the crowns.

I was informed that I am not able to have the post crowns replaced and would therefore like to know what my options are as I am becoming increasingly upset about this black metal showing.

thank you for your time and any help you can give

What is the best option for my husband’s weak teeth?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.

My fiance has very weak teeth. He is only 32 and now has to have a plate for one of his front teeth that had been capped but the tooth continued to rot underneath. He has good oral hygiene and does not want to end up with false teeth. Is there anything that you can recommend? We have considered veneers but I am concerned the tooth will continue to decay underneath which will ultimately require extraction anyway. Is there perhaps an alternative? We are getting married in December and would love to have this resolved.

Kind regards

Is my dentist using Social 6 braces correctly?

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doctor, I am a bit confused. My lower arch teeth are a bit crooked. I went to a dentist a few days ago and he proposed to fix them with minimum impact with “Social 6”. This would imply scraping off a bit of the enamel of my teeth to provide for some extra space for the teeth to move back into position.
I liked the dentist, and I was quite pleased the treatment did not imply removing my wisdom teeth, but reading some comments in this forum I gather that fixing the front 6 teeth (as apposed to the whole arch) and, above all, scraping the enamel off my teeth is not “good practice” and should not be done. What’s your view about it?
Many thanks for your time.

Kind regards

Will I have temporary teeth after my dental implant treatment?

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011
Q.

I am considering implants – I have been advised that one cannot always have temporary dentures whilst awaiting the fixed permanent teeth. As the implants (5) are for replacement of front teeth in the upper jaw this is obviously not something that I could consider.

Is this the case as to go without any front teeth for 6 weeks is not an option! I am hoping that this is just the implantologist being particulary cautionary. He has indicated that they will do their very best but is unable to guarantee until after the surgery. I have accepted 10 days without teeth to allow for healing to be maximised but 45 days is definitely out of the question.

Could a bridge be the answer to my dental problems?

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Q.

I have yellow stained and cracked teeth from a childhood of candy and soda pop, and now I am 28 years old and eating has become a worst nightmare for me. As I eat I feel little segments of my teeth while I am chewing as if I am eating glass. I have already had 4 extractions- because I am on public aid but I am wondering isn’t there a way I could get my teeth shaven down and then fitted with a fixed dental bridge? I have watched tons of bridge videos and I am just wondering if it could be done or in the missing spaces in my mouth couldn’t I get a mini implant in there and then the fixed bridge added or is it too much work to handle doing it this way? If you have any ideas on what I can do please feel free to let me know. thank you for your time

Can my broken tooth be saved?

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Q.

My upper back tooth, the one just in front of my wisdom tooth has had fillings, then a root canal. A year after the root canal the front wall of the tooth (just below the gum line)broke away. The back and side walls of the tooth were still fine. My dentist suggested a crown. After working on the tooth for a while he stopped due to my gum bleeding too much. I now have a tempory material over the portion of the tooth that is left and I need to return so he can take another look at it! Do you think the tooth can be saved? If the dentist decides its not possible to fit a crown is there anything left that can be done to save the tooth? Thank you for your time doctor
