Hello Dr Moore. I have a dental discount plan which covers dental services at a discounted price. I recently had six crowns placed (lower front, 22-27).
Standard price quoted was £1,100 and discounted price was £428.
However my dentist charged me an additional lab fee of £300 for each crown. Is this correct? I heard that crowns include lab fees.
My dentist charged me a “lab fee” in addition to the cost of the crown. I thought the cost of the crown would include lab fees associated with the crown. Any information on this would be very helpful as I currently don’t know where to turn. Thank you.

Is It Fair That My Dentist Can Charge An Extra £300 For Each Crowns Lab Fee?
Friday, June 20th, 2014I Have Veneers Which Keep Breaking Off And I Have No Confidence In My Dentist. Please Can You Advise Me?
Tuesday, June 17th, 2014 Dear Dr Hughes. I have had 6 veneers across the top row of my teeth. They have constantly broken off within one year, I had to pay for a second set – the dentist coolly said that he was a bad technician and that was all. I still had to pay full price for another set. I saw another dentist for a second opinion who said far too much of my original tooth had been removed. I then started having throbbing pain in my veneered teeth, the dentist said that I now need to have root fillings under all of them. I know that with gum shrinkage there will be gaps at the top of the teeth, but mine are black and ugly. I complained and she filled them with composite that doesn’t match my veneers. I have no confidence at all in my dentist. Another veneer broke off last night. I do not want to go back. On top of all this, she knew that I have severe Sjogren’s syndrome, and I have read since that I should have never had them done. Please can you advise me?
Many thanks.
I Grind My Teeth And My Crown Keeps Falling Out. Could I Get Dental Implants On The NHS?
Tuesday, June 17th, 2014Hello Dr Moore. I grind my teeth and I have crown at the front. I also have two false teeth but my crown keeps falling out. I did have a bridge on my three front teeth but I ended up with an abscess and had to have my root removed. I’m of ill health and my grinding is due to stress, it’s a vicious cycle because I’m worried about my health. I was wondering could I get implants on the NHS or if I could just get two for my front teeth and pay up myself? I don’t know how this all works and I’d just like some advice. Thanks.
I Am Self Conscious About My Gold Tooth. Is There A More Natural Looking Alternative I can Replace It With?
Monday, June 16th, 2014Hello Andrew, I need your advice. I had a gold tooth put in one of my top back teeth when I was younger. I think this was because it was a chipped tooth or it could have been a cavity as I also had root canal treatment. I was told the gold tooth would be best as I didn’t have wisdom teeth which I do now. I am self conscious when I smile because you can still see it, is there a more natural looking alternative I can replace it with?
Thanks, it would be great to hear from you.
I’ve Been Told That I Have To Get Used To My Bulky Crown. Could You Tell Me If This Is Correct Or Not?
Monday, June 16th, 2014 Good evening Dr Hughes. I hope you can help me determine whether I’ve had bad dental treatment or not? About 3 months ago I’ve had a crown placed on my upper front tooth. The temporary crown was fantastic and matched it well, unfortunately the permanent one is noticeably larger than the other teeth and it sticks out. My dentist told me it’s because my teeth are crowded and that I’ll get used to it.
I really disagree with him and have tried to get used to it but to no avail. Is it possible for me to send a picture to you to see if my dentist is trying to cover up bad dental work please? Many thanks.
I Feel A Throbbing Pain Ever Since My Crown Was Put Back In. Do You Have Any Idea Of What The Problem Might Be?
Tuesday, June 10th, 2014Hello Dr Hughes. I’d like your help and advice if it’s not too much bother. My front crown, which is about 8 years old, it fell out and my dentist stuck it back in. From then it hasn’t felt quite right. I am having a throbbing pain in it. Is the nerve still alive when you have a crown put? I am also getting root canal treatment on three molars not had them crowned yet but this hasn’t given me a lot of pain just the normal, after this type of treatment. All the pain is in my front crown. Do you have any idea of what the problem might be? Thank you for your time.
I Recently Had A Front Tooth Crown Fall Out. I Have Since Been Given A Quote By My Dentist For A Dental Implant. How Do I Know If I’m Being Ripped Off?
Wednesday, June 4th, 2014Hi Mark. I recently had a front tooth crown fall out. My dentist told me that the remaining tooth couldn’t be saved, so removed the tooth and I currently have a temporary denture which doesn’t fit correctly and is uncomfortable to wear. I have already been charged £219 for this treatment. I have been given a quote by my dentist for a dental implant, teeth whitening and 3 white fillings (to replace existing metal ones) which I feel is very expensive. How do I know if I’m being ripped-off? I have been told that my only other option is a permanent denture. My fear is that I pay another £219 and find that a permanent denture is uncomfortable to wear. My dentist has given me 1 week to make a decision and I’m not sure what to do?
I Damaged My Teeth As A Child. I Am Set To Wear A Bonded Retainer But I Worry About Keeping It Clean. What Is Your Opinion On This?
Friday, May 30th, 2014Hello Dr Moore. I have a six months smile brace on at the moment that I have been told will hopefully be removed in a months time. I am also having whitening and a couple of crowns, one a replacement on my front tooth the other to cover a dead tooth. I damaged my teeth as a child falling down stairs. I have been told that I will be given a permanent fixed wire retainer on the back of my teeth for life, but I am worried that not only will this affect my bite when I eat and I also worry about keeping it clean, what are your opinions on this? Thank you for your time.
My Dentist Is Too Busy To Replace My Old Crown. Should I Try Another Dentist?
Wednesday, May 28th, 2014My very old crown has fallen out and my dentist intends to restore the tooth and install a new one. He says this has only a 50% chance of working and cannot start work for some time as he is too busy to start now. It is covered with some white protective material at the moment; I am worried that the long wait to start mean deterioration underneath. He has given me three appointments so far but it will take some time to all be completed. The tooth I’m referring to is my upper left premolar. Should I wait that long or should I try another dentist? Thank you for your time.
