My teeth were filed down in preparation for a bridge but now the dentist says I can’t have them. What can I do?

Friday, December 17th, 2010
Q.

Good Evening. I have had my front teeth prepared for a fixed bridge. My 3 natural teeth were filed down and temporary bridge cemented on. It looks quite hideous to be honest, but I was prepared to put up with this in the expectation of a decent bridge, but dentist has told me he will do one long bridge over the filed down teeth now, instead of 3 crowns and a bridge fitted to these, as you say is how they are fitted. I am really fed up and want to confront this dentist, but he is a bit of a bully, so i need to be clear on what I can and can’t have. He told me, before the prep work, that my 3 natural teeth were strong enough to fit the bridge. Can you help, or advise, please. Thanks for your time.

My bottom teeth are worn down, I think because I may grind my teeth in my sleep. Should i get crowns or veneers?

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010
Q.

Hi. I am fifty five years old and my teeth are well looked after, and quite white with the bleaching that I have done every five years with my dentist. The problem is that my bottom teeth are quite worn down, i may grind them in my sleep. I have started to wear the cover that were for the bleaching to stop me from doing this. What do yiou think is the best option for me. Either to have crowns on them all, which II understand to be very very strong these days. Or for veneers, but are they as good, or as long lasting.

What metals are used in crowns?

Friday, December 10th, 2010
Q.

I was advised to have my gold crown removed (dentist said x-ray showed ‘a problem’). I’ve had the new crown about a year. The You & Yours programme about aluminum bronzes worried me as my crown is bronze coloured. Wrote to my dentist asking what metals were in my crown. She replied: zinc, silver, gold, palladium, indium and iridium. Because of my residual concern I would be grateful if you would confirm that this alloy would result in a bronze colour, and that there is no risk of the metals leaching.

Should I have to pay for a procedure if I have had it twice before and something has gone wrong?

Thursday, December 9th, 2010
Q.

I had a porcelain crown fitted and just over 12 months later it fractured. It was sent back to the lab but they would not admit any fault on their part. I had a new crown made to replace it and my dental clinic reduced the cost of this by £90 as good will. However that crown as now fractured in the same place as before and approx. after the same length of time. I have an appt. on Weds but would not be happy if I have to pay for a 3rd time. Where do i stand?

I have been advised that metal crowns last longer than porcelain crowns, is this correct?

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

My boyfriend has to have root canal treatment and his dentist has offered him a metal coloured crown. I think a natural tooth colour would look better because he already has a large metal crown on the other side but his dentist advises him that the metal lasts longer. Is that correct?
