My brother lost two teeth in a car accident, could dental implants be the answer?

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Q.

Hi Doctor Moore,

My brother was involved in a car crash 20 years ago which resulted in him losing his front two teeth and a titanium plate being inserted into the top palette of his mouth. Two front replacement teeth were drilled into the plate by the NHS at that time.

Twenty years later, he is very conscious that his teeth have moved and he now has a large gap between these front two teeth and the teeth on each side of these are crooked, discoloured and overlapping. His bottom teeth could do with some attention also. He does not smoke or have gum disease.

I keep encouraging him to get his teeth sorted but he’s concerned about a few things:
a) How painful or difficult would it be for him to have his teeth reconstructed under these circumstances?
b) The cost – could you give an indication of how much he would need to spend to correct all 4 teeth at the top of his mouth and correct a couple of crooked teeth at the bottom?
c) How long could he expect his teeth to last? He’s worried that, in his words, “once he starts messing”, he’ll have to continually fund replacement of any veneers or false teeth.

Thank you for answering my questions. I think it would transform his life if I could persuade him to take this step.

Kind regards

My gums have become swollen after cosmetic bonding, what can I do?

Monday, June 13th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr Moore
I had cosmetic bonding done 6 days ago to close minor gaps between the front teeth. Soon after that The gum tissue in one spot (Behind the two front teeth on the lingual side) swelled up and became painful. I went back to my dentist, he cleaned the surface where he applied the bonding material, which was painful, and gave me chlorhexidine rinse to rinse three times a day. There is some improvement but the area is still swallen and painful. My dentist said that if it does not get better he will need to do even deeper cleaning with local anesthesia. Things are not making sense to me. Why do I need deep cleaning after cosmetic bonding? What’s your opinion?
Thank you for your time

What can I do about my infected gums?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011
Q.

Three months ago I visited my dentist because I had a slight gum tenderness around one of my front incisor teeth. He suggested that I should rub Corsodyl around it twice a day. This treatment didn’t seem to work so he took an X ray which revealed that there was an infection. Probably five years previously, this tooth had been capped. He then suggested that he should attempt a root canal treatment, which he did ten days ago. Sadly, for me he said that he had not been able to do this successfully. I think he said it was due to “corrosion” ! He said come back and see me on the 9th June and we will decide what to do. Obviously, I do not wish to lose this front tooth; – would it be a good idea to be referred to a specialist endodontis ? I do not have any pain – at the moment – a very slight discomfort when I eat. I f you do suggest that I go to a specialist should I do this before 9th June and are you able to recommend someone really good in the area OR has it to be London ? Many thanks indeed for your help.

10 days after surgery I can not see the implant post, what can I do?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

Hi,
My husband has the surgical phase of a dental implant 10 days ago. Is it normal to see no evidence of the implant post in the gum? He is worried that he will need to have the gum cut again when the crown is fitted to expose the implant itself.
Also, he was due to have a further implant but apparently the nerve was too large for this to be carried out. Does this mean there is no chance for an implant there? We are struggling to get answers from the implant clinic.
Thanks very much

Sorry this is just padding as I’m getting a message box saying the question is too short… I’m just concise!

I have four missing teeth at the front, what are my replacement options?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

Hello doctor,

I had a cycling accident several years ago and unfortunately lost 4 of my front teeth at the top. I have currently got a denture in place but wanted to be able to have something more natural looking, I have asked for a bridge as I was advised by the dentist this would be possible, I have recently moved dentists and my current Dentist states that this is not possible because I have for teeth missing, what is your opinion on this matter as a work colleague has a bridge and has his 4 teeth missing at the front also. kind regards and thank you very much for your time

I have sjogrens syndrome and my dentist tells me I need to have dentures. Other options?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

Hello doctor, I have sjogrens syndrome and now have a mouthful of crowns all of which are shifting and my dentist has said that in the near future they will have to be replaced. I do have one real tooth left which he is going to have to completely remove this month. The only options he has given me is a mouthful of dentures, which horrifies me at aged 39! My dentist thinks that implants will not work because of the sjogens and because periodically I have to take steroids. I just wondered what are your thoughts and experiences on implants and sjogrens patients? thank you for your time

What is a good treatment for TMJ?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011
Q.

Last march i noticed a small lump and pain in my upper right gum, had xray done at dentist to reveal upper impacked wisdom tooth, I was 34 years old. Went to the maxillofacial hospital and was told that it didnt look like it would cause any problems and that most of the pain was TMJD and not from the tooth, alothough I tend to disagree, so its been a year now and not a painfree week has gone by. The wisdom tooth has now cut through the gum and my dentist can now see the cusp of the wisdom tooth and the shape through my gum, the pain is unbelievable at times and hurts in my nose and face, my two back teeth feel sore and feel like there is pressure on them, im now awaiting another appointment at the hospital to have it looked at again, but im afraid he will try to blame the pain on TMJ!, do you thing all this pain is from my tooth? I never had this pain before the lump in my gum was discovered. I really want it removed.
