I hate my sunken smile, how can I fix this?

Monday, August 6th, 2012
Q.

Hi doctor,i have a couple of questions. I had braces and had my 4 teeth extracted because i was not going to have enough space for my teeth to straighten out and with no teeth taken out my teeth were going to be to crowded and my lips were going to be sticking out to much( since i have thick lips). It was 2 from the top and 2 from the bottom and had no wisdom teeth cause they were taken out all 4 long time ago. My gums were being pulled back to close the gaps of the extracted tooths. At the end, all my teeth were straight but now my mouth looks like its sunken and my lips dont show anymore. I would like to have my lips back. Can the gums go back to where they were before and the same with the teeth? I know that i will be having the gap open, but is there a way i can have my teeth straight, and my lips outward without having my mouth looking sunken. Everytime i smile my teeth are straight but my smile looks sunken and my lips too, i dont like my smile.Know i wish i hadn’t taken any teeth out even if they were crooked. I had advised my orthodontist that i din’t wanted for my mouth to look sunken but there was nothing else to do, it was too late, the gaps were not yet closed. Do i need to consider tooth implant? How can this be fix. Please help me. Thank you for your time.

Can my overbite be fixed with dental veneers?

Monday, August 6th, 2012
Q.

I have an overbite. Both my top and bottom teeth jut out. I’ve been having on and off ortho work done for years and years. But turns out my doctor was a quack. And they are still not fixed. They are due to the fact that my teeth r just too big for my mouth. My bottom teeth are very close together not fully overlapping but the edges are very close and slightly overlap each other. I want to know if this all can be fixed with veneers. All the jutting, the crowdedness, all of it and I’m willing for them to shave down my teeth for as long as my lips fall on my teeth a lot nicer when closing and for a gorgeous smile. Can this happen? What do I ask for?

The bone used for dental implant treatment has failed, now what?

Monday, August 6th, 2012
Q.

My partner started implant treatment for a front tooth. The implant was put in, but the gum started to deteriate. He has now had a number of bone and gum grafts, but they all fail and now seem to be worse than when it was started.

The gum has been taken from his palette and the front of his mouth, is secured by stitches. After a few days however the gum disapears.

One of the dentists suggested the bone be removed from his chin, as the bone imported isnt working.

The dentist has provided little advice, and we dont know where it will go from here.

Do you have any advice?

My false tooth keeps falling out, why do you think this is and what should I do about it?

Monday, August 6th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I am 17 years old and I have had a false tooth since late 2010, before that I had a cap on my tooth, but then I got an infection after a root canal and then my tooth snapped off in my sleep. I then got given a temporary tooth on a pallet and I had that for from October 2010 to July 2011, then I got given a tooth which glues onto the next one.

I had no problems at all to until 21st July when it fell out in my sleep, I then got it glued back in on the Friday and it fell out again in my sleep that night. I then went back the following week to get the same thing done and they sent my tooth off, so I had to stick with my tooth on a pallet, but then I had to get a mould of my tooth done so I could have one remade. I then had to wait two/three weeks to get it put back in, I didnt have any problems with this one and I had had it in for a month, but then it fell out in my sleep again, is it possibly that I grind my teeth in my sleep?
Because I am not in a proper dentist, I am in the NHS walk-in-centre, my dentist is only in Tuesdays and Fridays, so sometimes it is hard when my tooth falls out because they could be busy or they might not be open when it falls out, Im really confused on what to do.

What do you suggest that I do? Should I ask my dentist if I can have a screw in tooth? Or am I too young for one of them.. I am 18 years old at the end of the month and I dont really want to have a tooth on a pallet for it..

Can you provide me with advice on applying veneers to a 60 year old lady?

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012
Q.

I have a 60 year old lady coming to surgery tomorrow wanting veneers UL1 and UR1 (actually – I may have triggered her off!).. anyways.. I would have never ever ever suggested veneers except for the MSc.. she has hypoplastic enamel which is pitted and stained and a prominent crack running longitudinally across the UL1 which is heavily stained. She says her teeth have always looked blackish!
problems:
1. she has a high scalloped gingiva UR1 and a shallow scallop UL1 – Need to do gingival contouring (would I need to trim bone?) -when do i take impressions? at the same appointment as contouring or after 1 week?
2. she has a high smile line 🙁
3. would whitening help? (pitted enamel).. and if i have to do veneers.. should i first be starting with whitening???

any help would be appreciated!

I had one of my premolars removed and now there is large gap forming between my two front teeth, what can I do to stop this?

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012
Q.

One week ago, I had a bicuspid extracted on my right side. Two days later I woke up to discover a fairly large gap had developed between my two front teeth. It has continued to widen each day. My dentist said that the only way to stop it from getting any bigger is for me to wear a retainer at night. If I want to close it permanently, he said I will need to wear braces.
Yesterday, I went back to have him look at a crown that had been put on a tooth that had root canal several years ago because it was loose. As he was trying to remove the crown, my tooth broke into three pieces and so THAT tooth also had to be extracted. Now, I am very worried about this gap in my teeth. Is there any way to close it up again without going into braces? I am almost 54 years old and have no periodontal disease. Thank you.

I’m suffering from great pain after receiving the Enlighten whitening treatment, when will the pain subside?

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Moore, can you answer my question for me? Just started using enlighten and after only the second day I am getting like electric shock pain in two teeth – one top and one bottom at front. I have never had pain like this before and whilst i expected sensitivity these pains are short but so unbelievably painful. I’ve been rubbing the de-sensitizer toothpaste on these teeth all day in work and it hasn’t stopped these intermittent pains. No one told me this could happen and I went to a dentist that specialises in whitening with a good reputation and paid £500 for this treatment. I don’t know if I can carry on – will it stay the same, get worse and last after treatment – can you help.
thanks

Is it true that because I am epileptic I cannot receive teeth whitening treatment?

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Moore, having considered having a procedure to whiten my teeth done professionally I should like to know is teeth whitening contra-indicated for all people with epilepsy, under all circumstances? I don’t seem to be able to find enough information on why this might be. Is it just with certain anti epileptic medication? Or say to do with photo sensitivity? I would be very grateful if you could provide some clarity in this matter, as I would dearly love to have my teeth professionally whitened but obviously I don’t want to put my health at risk. Thanks in anticipation.

My teeth are very worn down due to severe acid erosion, how much should I expect to pay to have this problem fixed?

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012
Q.

Hi Doctor Moore, I am a 38 year old man who has suffered with bulimia for many years, it is now in remision. I have a fair amount of acid erosion and shortening of my teeth. I see my dentist every six months and he tells me my oral hygeine is very good. I am concerned about how my teeth look and how long they will last. I feel it my be time to get something done. I am an anxious patient even though I am a health care profeesional, my anxiety is also exacerbated by the shame of being a male with this illness. Could you tell me what my options might be and how much I could be expected to spend.
