I keep needing root canals after getting dental crowns. What should I do?

Friday, November 30th, 2012
Q.

A year ago I had crowns on 5 upper front teeth replaced (solely cosmetic reasons originally). 2 of these subsequently need root canals. Just prior to this it was discovered that another 2 of these crowned teeth needed root canal re-treatment. During the last month or so, one of these (re-treated) crowns on a canine tooth has developed a \’lip\’, into which I can insert the tip of my fingernail. When I floss or use an oral irrigator I have now noticed a smell. The dentist xrayed the tooth but says there is nothing wrong with it but will replace it. I am loathe to do this due to all the recent problems I have had and yet more trauma to this tooth, & which , with every crown replacement, is fitted higher and higher up into the gum. On the other hand I don\’t want to forever have bad breath!! What would you advise? Is there any way this margin around the gumline/crown can be filled? Thank you

Will my root treated tooth discolour and how can I prevent this?

Thursday, November 29th, 2012
Q.

Hi Andrew,

I had a white filing in a tooth many years ago, i am not sure what the official tooth is called but it is my first big tooth in my upper right arch. My dentist has told me that it has leaked and now i need root treatment (I am sure they talked about removing the root). I am okey with this, well as ok as anyone is about dental treatment. My issue is from a cosmetic perspective. Is there a cosmetic procedure that will keep my tooth white and looking the same as i have heard that a tooth can discolor after root treatment. is there anything else that i should be thinking about or asking about to keep my tooth as healthy and looking as well as can be?

Thanks

I have lost several teeth and would like to get dental implants on the NHS. Any advice?

Monday, November 26th, 2012
Q.

I am a 44 yr old woman; as a result of a brain aneurysm, I had a stroke, which further resulted in a seizure and I lost my front teeth when I hit the ground face first and fractured the bone that holds yr front teeth. I am extremely self-conscious of having a partial denture and have had many problems with it. I understand under some circumstances, its possible to qualify for dental implants on the NHS. I have lost 10 teeth from my upper jaw so have no chance of ever being able to afford the costs privately. It is really affecting my confidence and getting me down. Any advice?

My tongue can’t sit properly as the teeth are too close. Can anything be done to resolve this?

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012
Q.

Hi I’m in need of some help, Im 31 have a great smile & i guess i am very very lucky I had a brace when I was younger, I have a terrible problem though as I’ve got older my upper teeth are closing in. I find it so uncomfortable that my tounge can’t sit properly & it causes me to always get ulcers I have even got a imprints on the side at the front. I have looked over sites & willing to pay if I can get this resolved cheaper as I was never given a retainer & there’s not much needed doing apart from moving the two teeth away from my tounge. Im not sure what help I could get & need expert advice on how I can resolve this situation. It’s always there & gets me down. I have my old moulds & wonder where I can go from here. I wonder or hope someone could use me for a new system you may introduce. Or please could u advise me on what type of brace i would need. Its not for cosmetic reasons just to feel at more ease & comfortible living in my own mouth. Thank you for listening

How many teeth are moved during the whole process of the 6 Month Smiles treatment?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012
Q.

I’m just looking at the 6 month smile program and i was wondering how many teeth are moved in the whole process?

I’ve read that only the teeth in the smile will move, how many teeth are considered the smile group? front 4,6,8? And do they include the bottom teeth also?

Also does this effect the bite after the procedure when only part of my teeth have moved? Atm my bite is uneven but it feels ok, will it change dramatically?

Many Thanks for your time

Are there any alternatives to tooth extraction?

Friday, October 19th, 2012
Q.

I have a mesioangular impacted lower wisdom, causing the 2nd molar next door to rot. I am terrified of having any kind of intervention and this terrifies me even more. The other bottom wisdom has a lot of pain, and I suspect a cavity where I cannot clean it. I got an opinion from a private dentist and he said hospital for removal. I would rather have the second molar removed as I hope there is less risk of future problems?there is definitely less pain (had one removed on other side). Are there alternatives to extraction? The X-rays are with the private dentist at the moment, if I were to email them to you, how is this done?

Can I qualify for free orthodontic treatment if I am in full time education at the age of 18?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi Andrew, I wondered if you could help me? At the age of 14, I was told by my dentist that I would require orthodontic treatment to fix my out of shape mouth.
The orthodontics couldn’t offer me treatment for another 2 and a half years, so my parents paid £1,800 for me to have it done there and then to save the wait. I was meant to have them on for 18 months, but they got removed after about a year as apparently my treatment had finished. I wore my retainer for 6 months and all was fine.
I am now 18, going to be 19 in December, and my bottom teeth are all out of shape again, and I have a big overbite of my upper jaw. I am still in full time education, can I qualify for free treatment? Even though I’ve had it before, paid for it, and it was only a temporary fix?

Many Thanks

I’m about to have several teeth extracted but why do I have to wait weeks for my new dentures?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012
Q.

I have finally visited a dentist after 20 years, knowing that many teeth have to be removed. My dentist is nice, but I dont think she realises how terrified I am and have been. I have had three teeth out already, and have a temporary denture, which is white compared to my teeth. Thats okay, I can cope with that. I now have to have five more out. The two front ones and either side. She says I will have to hibernate for a couple or so weeks while I wait for my dentures, but that is putting me off having the teeth removed, never mind the terror I feel about the removals. Also there seems to be choices as to the materials the teeth are made of, which she has not given me the option of. I only know this because i have been researching as you do. A little bit of knowledge and all that. But at the end of the day, its my look and mouth and face. I am worried. Can you help with my concerns.

Would an Inman Aligner help re-align my teeth after my wisdom teeth have caused damage to them?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012
Q.

Hi Andrew, so here’s my problem: I used to have perfect teeth until about a year ago when all my 4 wisdom teeth came out. When they came our, they pushed one of my front teeth out(next to the canine tooth) and the other one is my front teeth. Now I am left with 2 front teeth sticking out and I fear that the wisdom teeth have not fully erupted and so more damage will be done. The protruding teeth are really getting me down as I used to have nice teeth! Please advise me as to what I should do. I was thinking about getting an Inman Aligner, but I am not sure and it might just be too costly only for two teeth. Can you help at all? What would be the best option for me? Regards,

Do I need proof that I suffer from dental nerve injury before I can begin a lawsuit against the NHS?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012
Q.

You could help me out with this. Do I need to get a diagnosis of dental nerve injury before i start my lawsuit. I have diagnosis of TMJD but I did not mention I had extractions as a child. So before I start my lawsuit for dental nerve damage, do I need a diagnosis, and can my doctor verify it.

Hi

Funnily enough i was thinking of suing the national health service for Because when I was 16 I had 4
permanent tooth removed without my mums consent, first I thought it
was 8 but now read that 4 of them could be impacted wisdom tooth, I
had tooth extractions and braces and it made my attractive face look
unattractive and my 4 wisdom teeth never came through and are hidden
underneath gums because of bad orthodontic work (braces). I have
dental Phobia now, and suspect I suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia
(dental nerve injury) and distress this has caused me is immense. I
went to City University in London (which is the best City University)
and was studying Business Computing but I dropped out because of
Depression. I could’ve done any Business that were of interest to me
and would’ve had the financial backing from my family. But now they
are supporting me because I have panic attacks even in Hospitals. I
have lost interest in many things because of Depression. before my
treatment I was attractive and had no psychiatric illnesses. I feel my
life has been turned upside-down.
