Why Is My Tooth So Sharp?

Thursday, September 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes,
I have a question to ask you about one of my bottom teeth and I hope you can help me. Over the past couple of months it has been very sharp and cuts my tongue whenever I slide it across my bottom teeth. The dentist I regularly go to has filed it down to give it a smoother feel, but the sharpness is still constantly there. I also got tooth bonding done after it was filed, and the sharpness is still there. What do you suggest this could be, and what would I be able to do to get rid of this sharpness on my tooth? Thank you for your time.

I hope you can help me.

Dear Dr Gambroudes.

Sometime in February last year, I had a weird sensation on my left canine tooth. I felt this sensation even more strongly whenever I had something to eat or something to drink. As soon as I could feel it, I’d have to stop eating or drinking because it got too intense. This went on for a couple of weeks. A few weeks after I first felt it, there was a chip on the tooth, which then left a hole in the tooth. A few days after that, I noticed that the affected tooth was changing colour. What could be the problem, and what do you advise I do in these circumstances? Thank you.

The Back of My Crown Feels Rough. What Should I Do?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Good afternoon Dr Gambroudes, thank you for taking the time to read my question. I have just had a back crown replaced today with a CEREC crown. I have been asked to wait a week and see how it feels, and then by all means go back to the clinic if there are any problems. At the moment, it’s obviously quite sore and feeling a bit strange which is of course to be expected, but I have realised as the anaesthetic is wearing off that the back of the crown feels very rough against my tongue when other crowns I already have feel smooth. Is this normal? What should I do please? Thank you in advance.

How Strong are Replacement Teeth, and How Long Should They Last?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Gambroudes. How strong are replacement teeth? Also, how long are expected to last? I had one of my wisdom teeth replaced, but it came loose and fell out after two years. Now I only eat with the left side of my mouth. I feel very uncomfortable with the tooth missing, what should I do? I feel that I should replace it to enable me feel comfortable and enjoy my meals. I will also want to change my dentist.
I will also want to know how often one needs to visit the dentist so as to take care of the teeth before any problems occur. What is cosmetic teeth surgery? How often should one go for teeth cleaning? Thank you.

Are There Any Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment?

Monday, September 15th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Gambroudes, I’m hoping you can help me with my problem.  I have a deep filling in my second top molar which has a very big cavity. As I’ve mentioned,  is currently patched up with a deep filling, but I have been advised by my dentist that root canal treatment will be required if it gets much worse. I do not want root canal treatment at all, but I also don’t want my tooth to die and lose colour.

Instead of root canal surgery, what can be offered to keep the appearance of a good tooth?

I understand that surgery will probably be required, but don’t know the options or the costs.

Thanks in advance.

Do You Have Any Advice for Dental Phobic Patients?

Friday, September 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. Could you please advise me on getting my teeth treated? I’m so scared of dentists because of a bad experience I had in the past, but now I really need dental work done. I can’t even look at people right in their face when I speak to them. And I also need assurance that the work I need can be done without me having to be put to sleep, because that’s the main fear I have. Thank you, I have totally let myself down by letting it go this long without dental treatment. I don’t have one full tooth in my mouth. I would just really appreciate some help and friendly advice. Thank you very much.

I Have Chipped and Broken Teeth. What Can Be Done?

Friday, September 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. I have lost one wisdom tooth and another is half broken. Most of my teeth are chipping off and they have holes in them. My dentist has given me a special toothpaste to use but there’s been no improvement since I started using that and all he does with the the second chipped wisdom tooth is fill it with a white paste. I’m only 34 years old and I don’t know what to do, but what can you tell me about this? What is wrong and how can I repair them? Also, how much will it cost please? This is so depressing, I don’t know what to do. Please help and give me some advice. Thank you in advance.

What is the Best Treatment for Dental Fluorosis on the Teeth?

Thursday, September 11th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes. I have dental fluorosis on both of my two front teeth. They are noticeably stained with large circular white marks, one on each of the two teeth. I feel that this affects the overall appearance of my teeth. I am 19 years old and I would really like to fix this problem. Would you recommend something along the line of veneers or Lumineers, or a treatment that is something totally different to veneers? I do not have a problem with the rest of my teeth, it is just the appearance of the front two that I would like to fix. I would appreciate any help you can give.
Thank you.

How Much Would it Cost to Straighten Just One Tooth?

Thursday, September 11th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I was just wondering how much it would cost for me to straighten just one tooth at the front of my mouth? It just needs to be pulled forward because it has been knocked back and it looks terrible when I smile. I do have a dentist that I see regularly, but because I’m on benefits he will only do the treatment that he thinks is really needed. He says this but I feel like this is really needed, it’s knocking all my confidence and I hate smiling just because of this one tooth please could you help me understand what I’ll need doing to bring this tooth forward, and how much it will cost? Thank you.

Is There a Way to Get My Smile Fixed at a Low Cost?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014
Q.

Hey, Dr Hughes. I have a few missing teeth and the teeth I have are discoloured. I am getting so down about their appearance. Is there any way I can get them fixed so I can finally having a bright smile like my friends, but at a low cost? I have been told that treatment will cost around £5000, and that would be for a couple of implants, teeth whitening and a new crown. I cannot afford this and I hate leaving the house due to my smile. Do they have students learning or something that could do it or any other cheaper alternatives? I’m stuck for options. Thank you for reading this question.
