If My Damaged Tooth Is Crowned, Will It Fracture The Root And What Are My Other Options?

Monday, October 28th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. My upper left lateral was crowned to the base of the root after an abscess, which led to subsequent root canal treatment and finally the breaking of the weakened tooth. The post has broken with around a quarter of it still left in the root. Currently it is temporarily re-cemented back in.

Could this be re-crowned or is the removal of the remaining bit of the post likely to fracture the root?

Is is possible to have this re-crowned or is the only option, if I do not want a denture or the risk of damage to the adjoining teeth by a bridge, an implant?

Thank you.

I Have A New Porcelain Bridge Which Feels Too High, What Should I Do?

Monday, October 21st, 2013
Q.

I have just had a new porcelain bridge fitted (4/5 upper left) and although the dentist insisted the fit was good I knew it felt too high, after much drilling I said it was okay but would let it settle for a few days. I feel it is still too high and plan to return to my dentist ASAP however I would like to know
a.) Will the constant drill undermine the new bridge? b.) Should a cantilever bridge fit under the gum line like a crown? My brand new bridge looks like it has a small space between bridge and gum line toward the inner side of tooth but again the dentist said through looking at X-ray it was an excellent fit. Please advise me.

Kind regards.

I’m Worried That I’ll Keep Having To Pay For Crowns, Would I Be Better With A Permanent Metal One?

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013
Q.

Hello, Dr Moore. I’ve previously had treatment for a porcelain crowning fitted onto my bottom left incisor, but after a year it has completely shattered off, the capping I had before this was a lot stronger, but I fear now that I’m 18 that I have to pay for a new one, and I’m told that the crowns are only meant to last for a few years and it’s a 300 pound replacement each time which I would struggle to afford. So I’ve come to the conclusion that I would rather have a more permanent metal replacement of some sort. What would be best type to get and how much would it cost me? Also what do you think would be the cheapest? Thanks, I really hope you can answer my question.

I Have A Crown That Doesn’t Match And Is Starting To Give Me Pain, Will I Have To Start Again From Scratch?

Monday, September 16th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Shaffie, I’d like to discuss with you and tell you that I have a crown on my tooth next to the main front one up the top, when it was done it wasn’t ever matching and I had it done over two years ago, it’s just starting to give me pain and I’m not sure why this is? I would really like the crown replaced with a much better match, can they use the same crown and change the colour or do I have to start from scratch? I’ve changed dentist as since having the crown they wouldn’t sort it out for me when I wasn’t too happy with it, I paid 350 for the crown and I feel very self conscious and I feel like I can never show my teeth to anyone in public. Thank you, I hope you can help.

I Feel Silly Going Back To My Dentist A Third Time, Why Didn’t My Dentist Polish It When I Went Back A Second Time?

Friday, September 13th, 2013
Q.

Earlier this week I had two top front crowns replaced however when I got home I realised that one crown was longer on one site. I went back the next day and my dentist filed some of the crown down , a little too much if I’m being honest but he made me feel so silly for coming back I did not feel like I could say anything so I just left.

The problem is the filed tooth feels so rough and sharp and I am constantly aware of it when I talk as it rubs on my upper lip and tongue, but I feel too silly to go back again. My question is should my dentist have polished my tooth or something else in order to smooth it out? Thank you.

My Front Teeth Are Brittle After Root Canals, My Question Is: Can The Crown Be Attached Under The Gums To Look Like The Original Teeth?

Thursday, September 12th, 2013
Q.

My front teeth have had root canals and became brittle and now only the roots are left. No more crowns. The roots are up to the gum edge only. One dentist said that the roots can be cleaned again and then posts will be installed. The porcelain jacket will now be attached. My question would be: Can the crown be attached under the gums so it will appear to be like the original teeth and so the dirt will not easily enter the jacket. Will they be strong enough to use it for biting?

My Dentist Thinks My Dental Health Is Fine, But I Think There Is An Infection. Should I Get A Second Opinion?

Monday, September 9th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I want to tell you about a number of problems I have over my latest visit to my local dentist. I have had all my old fillings re-done and I had three crowned teeth that were pulled and infected for, I’m not sure how long, probably over two years and have been on a lot of antibiotics and every time the antibiotics are gone this terrible smell comes back. The last crowned tooth was pulled three weeks ago and I still have the infected/decay smell. Why is this? Could my gums be infected in that area or is it the jaw bone? I went to the dentist yesterday thinking I might still have an infected tooth and he said no and went as far as to give me a letter stating my dental health is fine!

I Have A Crown With A Post That Keeps Coming Loose. What Is The Best Way To Get This Fixed?

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013
Q.

Why does my crown with a post keep coming loose? It is about 11 years old and I have been to my dentist at least 3 times in order to have it glued back in.  It is a front tooth with 5 more crowns next to it, all of which are fine so I just wondered if it may be the case that the crown could be glued in stronger?  I would be very grateful for your advice as I am getting to the point of thinking about having it removed and having a false tooth fitted as a replacement.

My Crown Has Fallen off the Implant, Do I Have To Have The Treatment Done Again?

Friday, August 2nd, 2013
Q.

I had an implant and crown put in three years ago never had any problem until yesterday morning. I was eating and the crown fell off the implant. I found the crown and the smell was so bad I had to run brush my teeth and rinse my mouth out. I noticed that the implant post is still in there but the crown I have in my hand, Do I have to go and have the procedure done all over again from the beginning or will they just reattached the crown to the implant again? Please help as I am unsure whether I have to pay the 5000 dollars again or not.

Is An Implant My Only Option?

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013
Q.

Had a crown for front tooth at least 20 it came loose after about 5 years dentist x-rayed it and refitted which was fine for about 4 years then infection showed up under crown dentist tried to get crown off but it would not budge so used cement to firmly fix it in place as said pulling it off could fracture tooth root. Had regular check ups and all has been well until I had an accident whereby I was hit in the mouth crown is now moving loose by the gum line. Old dentist now gone from practice but new dentist says he will do nothing and recommends implant. Is this only option?
