Should My Crowns be Thicker Than My Natural Teeth?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2015
Q.

Is it normal for crowns on my two front teeth to feel and look thicker than my adjacent natural teeth? These are my second set of crowns. They’ve always felt rather bulky. They were done about 13 years ago. I do have an overbite. Could this be why they seem to stand out when I smile? I would like to have them replaced, however I’m afraid the look will not be improved. Both times these crowns were done by dentists. Is it better to go to a dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry? I am hoping that cosmetic dentistry has improved since my crowns were done.

Should I Have Internal Bleaching, a Crown or Veneers to Treat Discoloration?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I had a root canal on my maxillary lateral right incisor about 10 years ago, and it has discoloured really badly. This happened after my second set of braces were removed. Initially bonding masked the grey tone but eventually that’s come off as well. The tooth has also rotated back to its original shape prior to braces. Do you suggest internal bleaching, veneers or crowns? The thought of having a lot of the tooth shaved for a crown scares me a bit, especially in case it breaks. With veneers, would I require one or more to match the surrounding teeth? Thank you.

Is It Safe to Cut a Bridge to Treat an Infected Tooth?

Monday, March 30th, 2015
Q.

Hi, I have a porcelain coated platinum bridge which I have had for about 23 years and it has not caused any problems. But now I have an infection in one of the teeth holding the bridge, which I have been given antibiotics for.
My dentist said he needs to remove the infected tooth and therefore will cut the bridge at the other tooth and then remove part of the bridge with the infected tooth. Is it safe to cut the bridge? Thank you.

How Can I Restore my Missing Teeth?

Monday, March 30th, 2015
Q.

Many years ago when I had my first child I lost a lot of teeth whilst I was pregnant, it didn’t matter how much milk I drank and healthy food I ate, and had to have a plate fitted. Then 16 years later it happened again.I lack confidence in a very big way. Can you please tell what I can do? I was referred many years ago for implants but I got scared and didn’t get it done on the NHS back then. My dentist said in time I’m going to loss the front one. Please can you help to advise me on what I can do? Thank you.

Can I Have a Tooth Removed and Replaced with a New One?

Friday, March 27th, 2015
Q.

Hello. I had braces treatment when I was around 18 – 19. I am 25 now and I have this one tooth that is slowly going behind my main top tooth. I don’t want braces again, but I am happy with anything but braces. Can you remove and insert a new tooth? also my teeth don’t overbite, I think I needed jaw surgery but my dentist didn’t push it.

Thank you.

What Kind of Monthly Payment Plans are Available for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Thursday, March 26th, 2015
Q.

Hello. My teeth need completely sorting out. I am 23 and have two root canals that need doing, I think they both have an abscess on the as well. Also, my mouth is filled with metal fillings and I would love to just have white fillings. I think there is a lot of work that needs doing. They look nice when I smile but they are ruined. Do you know how much it is likely to cost, would I be able to get the work done and pay back monthly?
If you could let me know any information that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Is Surgery the Only Option for my Son’s Lower Jaw Misalignment?

Thursday, March 26th, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes.
My son is 17 years old. His front two teeth are coming outwards onto his lower lip. I know we’ve left it late, we should have had braces put on him when he was younger. My worry is the orthodontist referred him to hospital and they gave us an option for him to have surgery to align his lower jaw. I’m concerned about this surgery. Can I ask you if there is another option, just so the front two teeth can be worked on through cosmetic dentistry? I await a reply. Many thanks.

Which Treatment Will Close the Gaps in my Teeth?

Tuesday, March 24th, 2015
Q.

Hello. I’m a 17 year old girl and I have about 5 or 6 gaps on my top teeth as well as on the bottom set. I wanted to know the best treatment to solve them. Some of my teeth on the top set are weirdly shaped so I don’t think braces will solve it. In terms of size I can fit my tongue between all the gaps on the top set. Please help me, I want to become a dental therapist/hygienist and I want to have the best teeth possible. Thank you.

How Can My Gum Recession be Treated?

Monday, March 23rd, 2015
Q.

Hi, I have severe gum recession and have already been told I have bone loss. I had 2 years of treatment at the hospital 7 years ago and recently have noticed a deterioration. I am also losing my bite and scared of losing my teeth. I have heard of skin grafts. Can you advise and tell me if you deal with this kind of procedure? I am scared of losing my teeth. I am 52 years of age, taking vitamin C and vitamin D supplements. I am menopausal, which someone told me could lead to recession and bone loss. Please can you help? Thank you.

Is There an Alternative to Having a Dental Plate?

Friday, March 20th, 2015
Q.

I have a tooth on a plate, it is the third one in from the front. I have had it for a long time but it doesn’t feel as secure as before. I have been advised to have an implant by my dentist, and I can’t have a bridge as the other teeth are not too strong and are filled quite heavily. But I would rather have another single tooth, due to the expense. Is there a procedure where the tooth can be put on with 2 clips attached to the two surrounding teeth, rather than a plate? I would be grateful for any advice.
