Is it best to have root canal done if having a new crown? My dentist advises a crown for a tooth that has a large filling and says the tooth is stronger with the root still there., whereas my previous dentist said the opposite. I’m 64 and don’t want to take any chances with my teeth!

I would try to avoid root canal if possible and isn’t always necessary if you are having a crown. A (periapical) x-ray and some tooth tests should confirm that the root canal is or isn’t necessary before placing the crown.
