Can I Get Braces on the NHS?

Q.
I’m 21 years old and I’m unemployed. Am I allowed braces on the NHS?

The reason I ask is,  from the age of 14 I have been bullied regarding my teeth. I’ve never had confidence because of this, I have received counselling and nothing has helped!

When I was 16 I asked my dentist for braces and he said I don’t need them and if I want them then I have to pay £2000, so after that I thought I’m never going to get straight teeth.

Today I decided to look up about prices and it stated that if I was under 18 I would have been able to get them on NHS!

I have had a very hard life regarding this.

How do I go about applying for NHS braces? Regards.

A.
Hello and thank you for getting in touch. Unfortunately I’m not sure on the current NHS regulations regarding this. Usually, this treatment is considered cosmetic, so it’s unlikely to be free. However, many practices offer payment plans to make it easier to pay for treatment so it’s worth having a look around to see the different ways of making payments more manageable. Kind regards, Marcus.
