after a crown preparation on a back molar i felt a slight pain do i need a root canal

Q. After crown preparation on a back molar I have slight pain when I bite and it is sensitive to cold. My question is should I ask for a root canal before the crown is placed next week I did have an xray and was told I did not need a root canal. The crown is needed due to a large amalgam filling that showed cracks.

A. If its only slight pain then these symptoms are normal, as you probably have minor leakage of the temporary, in which case, root canal is not needed.
