Yellowing teeth 'can be easily corrected'

A lifetime of caffeine, red wine and soft drinks can lead to unattractive yellow teeth, reports the Star-Telegram. However, with a wealth of cosmetic dentistry options available, people no longer have to live with an unsightly smile, it claims. Consulting a cosmetic dentist is the first point of call, although they may have to resolve any problems with tooth decay, cavities or gum recession before whitening treatments, warns Matthew Messina, consumer adviser to the American Dental Association. Often, people turn to whitening toothpastes or over-the-counter products, the newspaper continues, adding that often these will only give minor results, if any at all. The most dramatic improvement can be seen with professional bleaching procedures involving lasers and a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution, it advises, warning patients to stick to white-coloured foods for the first few days after the treatment. In addition to bleaching procedures, to whiten a single tooth, cosmetic dentists will often recommend bonding or veneers, the publication concludes.
