Winchester Dentist to Travel to Nepal to Help Patients in Need

A dentist from Winchester is preparing to swap Eastleigh for Nepal this spring as he takes part in a charity project to help patients in need.

Dr Peter Saund has already volunteered in Peru, Kenya and the Amazon basin and he is now gearing up for a new challenge. Dr Saund, 52, will travel to Kathmandu on the 23rd of April. He will then transfer to remote villages in the Himalayas as part of a project run by the charity Dentaid.

Dr Saund will use basic equipment including a foldaway dental chair to treat hundreds of people, many of whom will never have seen a dentist before. The Dentaid project is one of the first dental aid programmes to reach Nepal following the horrific earthquake that killed and displaced thousands of people.

Dr Saund is a veteran of volunteering, but he is still shocked by conditions in every place he visits. The environment will be very different to the treatment rooms he is used to at his practices in Eastleigh and Winchester. He has volunteered numerous times after being inspired to help others when he lost his wife Veena to cancer at the age of 43. He has funded the trip, which costs around £2,500, himself with help from friends colleagues and patients. He is looking forward to helping those in need.

The main goal for the team is to provide basic dental treatment for people who have been cut off and isolated by the earthquake. Much of the infrastructure was destroyed and it has made it incredibly difficult for help to get to those worst affected.
