A study by the British Dental Association (BDA) recently reports that dentists throughout the UK have seen a rise in teeth grinding responsible for the condition known as “bruxism”.

Bruxism is not only about teeth grinding, but how the jaw clenches causing jaw pain, headaches, and occlusal trauma or malocclusion that requires dental treatment. Even though digestive conditions, chewing, and anxiety whether from financial strain, economic downturn, or other factors, contributes to bruxism, the habit can also cause further stress and other health disorders. Treating Bruxism depends on the cause.

Medotech, the Danish biotech company has created Grindcare, an electrical product that manages and reduces the teeth grinding habit. It is able to gauge the progress of facial muscles when sleeping by way of a tiny electrode located on the temple. It is reported to decrease teeth grinding by a greater amount that 50% during three weeks and equal to 80% after six to eight weeks, according to Medotech.

Since the product gained greater popularity in 2009, more British dentists are offering the treatment. It teaches the muscles to relax, in order to help reduce or even cure the problem, according to Dr Oulton, the first British dentist pioneering its use.
