A dental practice in Wickersley is hosting a free oral cancer screening event to celebrate Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Free screening will be available on the 17th September.

Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is a national event, which is designed to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage as many people as possible to have a screening test. Screening enables dentists to spot early warning signs of mouth cancer.

The Wickersley Dental Practice will be offering free tests between 11am and 1pm and 4pm until 6pm on September 17th. Appointments can be booked in advance and patients will be able to turn up on the day for walk-in appointments.

Natalie Wright, from the surgery, said that this is a cause very close to the team’s heart after a colleague was diagnosed with the disease two years ago. Screening is really important because it gets people talking about mouth cancer and encourages them to get checked out. In many cases, people are unaware of the warning signs and symptoms and this contributes to late diagnosis.

Mouth cancer has become increasingly common in the UK and more than 6,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, with many people facing a poor prognosis because the disease has been discovered at a late stage. With screening, dentists are able to detect early signs and also take the time to talk to patients about the causes and risk factors and the symptoms they should look out for in the future.
