Why is it important to floss?

Sample News Big

Flossing daily is crucial as it removes harmful germs which attack your gums and teeth.

It polishes the surface of your teeth, cleans the areas that your toothbrush cannot reach and reduces oral odours.

If you don’t usually floss your gums may bleed the first few times that you do floss. This shows that disease is present. However, as you begin to floss daily the bleeding should cease.

Ok so flossing is important but what is the best way to floss?

Dentists recommend that you should use an 18-inch piece of floss which you wind most of around your middle fingers.

As the floss becomes dirty or frayed adjust the floss so you are always cleaning with a clean bit of the strand.

You should gently guide the floss between your teeth. Don’t snap it against gums otherwise they may bleed when nothing is wrong. You don’t need to use an aggressive sawing motion but you do need to hold it against your teeth firmly.

For the best results remember to clean all of your teeth.

Flossing works best if done every day for around two minutes at a time. It should be companied by twice daily toothbrushing and regular visits to the dentist.
