West Yorkshire dentists urged to see healthy patients less frequently

Dentists in West Yorkshire are being advised to see healthy patients less frequently as part of a new initiative, which is designed to make appointments more accessible to those in need.

The Recall Matters scheme, which has been launched in the area, aims to ensure that more appointments are available for patients suffering from oral health problems by freeing up unnecessary appointments for patients with a clean bill of oral health. Many of us grow up thinking that we need to see a dentist every 6 months, but in many cases, it’s not necessary to see a dentist this frequently. The programme is encouraging local dentists to advise patients who have healthy teeth and gums to make appointments every 12-24 months.

Wakefield’s health scrutiny committee will review a report related to the project on Thursday 27th September. The report states that the aim of the project is to work with dental professionals to increase recall intervals for patients with good oral health in line with NICE guidelines. Many patients find it difficult to get an appointment, and it is hoped that freeing up routine slots that aren’t required could help those who need treatment to see a dentist sooner. The report recommends intervals of up to 24 months for healthy adults and 12 months for children, but highlights the importance of patients being involved in the decision-making process.
