Welsh Government Sets 100% Dental Access Target

The Welsh government has set an access target of 100% for dental patients after a survey revealed that only 37% of dental practices in Wales are accepting new patients.

The figure was revealed by the Welsh Liberal Democrats earlier this week and research also showed that of the practices that are accepting new patients, 63% have a waiting list.

Kirsty Williams, Liberal Democrat leader, said that the figures were “shocking” and called for the government to take action to improve access to dental services for patients in order to ensure that all patients are able to register with a surgery in their local area.

Ms Williams called for the government to set a target of 100% for dental access and First Minister, Carwyn Jones, confirmed that this was the plan. Mr Jones said that the government was aiming to ensure that all patients are able to register with an NHS dentist by the end of 2016.

Ms Williams said that the current situation was unacceptable and assured the public that her party will be keeping a close eye on the Labour government to ensure that they stick to their word and recognise the importance of oral health.
