Welsh dental scheme expands
It h
as been announced that a dental program aimed at kids in Wales is to be expanded.
The scheme provides free toothpaste, brushes and oral health tips to kids from the poorest parts of Wales in an attempt to improve dental standards in the country.
The Designed to Smile scheme was initially aimed at three to five-year-olds but now it is being rolled out for six and seven-year-olds in Communities First areas too.
Reports suggest that Edwina Hart, Welsh Health Minister, said that as the dental health of children in Wales was poor compared to other parts of the UK that funding would be doubled to £3.1m.
As part of the Designed to Smile programme, dental health support workers supervise tooth-brushing classes in schools.
Ms Hart said something had to be done to tackle high rates of tooth decay in Wales.
She called out to parents, saying that they had a ‘significant role to play’ when it comes to their children’s oral health and said they should try create a positive tooth brushing routine in their children’s lives.
Dr Hugh Bennett, a dental consultant with the National Public Health Service, said that Neath, Port Talbot and Swansea currently have extremely high levels of dental decay in kids.
He added that positive steps needed to made to end pain caused by tooth decay.
