Veneers ‘prevent nail biting’

Veneers can help people to stop biting their nails, it has been claimed.

Jeffrey Weller, dentist and founder of Weller Aesthetic & Restorative Dental Care in Chicago, claimed having the cosmetic dentistry treatment can deter people from their biting habit.

He explained to the Chicago Tribune that unlike natural teeth, veneers do not get sharper with nail biting and therefore the experience is made less satisfying.

"It can be more aggravating than stimulating when they have the veneers on," he said. "The aggravation can deter them."

However, nail biting can be a big problem for people who wear braces, warned the Academy of General Dentistry, as it can increase the pressure and damage the roots of the teeth.

If the problem continues, the teeth could fall out completely, it added.

Nail biting is medically termed onychophagia and it has been estimated to affect between 28 and 33 per cent of children.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18606821-ADNFCR

Paul Says :

I’ve had bonding and veneer work to my upper front teeth to cover up the physical damage resulting from constant and extremely short nail biting over 35 years. Unfortunately, the cosmetic dentistry did not deter the habit. For a short time after each treament I made an effort not to bite my nails but was always overcome by the nail biting compulsion to resume the habit with reckless abandon. Now, I need extractions and a partial denture of the upper front teeth– a terrible, but true, story.
